*Alton Brown had an interesting take on fresh seafood. He said that if the closest you can get to the ocean in an hour is watching "Hawaii 5-0" reruns, don't bother with seafood.
news flash: big chain grocery stores, thanks to the requirements of supplying them efficiently and at reasonable cost, are by definition more than an hour away from the ocean. If you must risk life, limb, and pants, then get it direct from the docks, or at the very least from teh wholesaler at their purchasing location.
-
@accalia You and I both got a downvote.
Somebody from the seafood in here ?

either that or someone's running a downboat script.

Is a downboat another name for a submarine ?

I think he's exaggerating a bit. I live near Dallas. I could get to the ocean from here in 4 hours by car if I was willing to risk speeding tickets, and I do eat seafood here. On the other hand, it's hard to beat "was still swimming half an hour ago" for freshness.
@accalia said in Hacking the Deere:

I see what you did there.

@antiquarian said in Hacking the Deere:

Dallas has a big enough (and rich enough) population to justify flying in fresh seafood. I've gotten really good seafood there, despite it being one of the largest cities in the country without a navigable body of water nearby.

Back to the OP, there were hearings about how car and equipment manufacturers are now licensing the software that controls vehicles and machinery. Ford, GM, Chrysler and others made reasonable arguments, that I still disagreed with. John Deere on the other hand were complete and total fuckwits about it. Their testimony was very patronizing and I would find very off-putting if I were a consumer of their products.
In some ways that has really hurt them. My father lives about an hour outside of the city we live in, in the middle of farm country. What used to be mostly John Deere green equipment in the fields is more and more Case and New Holland. I don't know if there has been any real impact to their market share. Probably not. But in that area there was a real backlash about it. I have also seen very few new John Deere heavy machines in the past year or so. The very few people I have talked to about it have had the sentiment of, "If I cannot work on it myself, I will buy another brand."
Let's just hope other manufacturers do not follow their lead. People tend towards buying things that are more "free", at least in farming and construction. We always purchased Case-Steiger machines because we could buy the 435 models (435hp) and have the dealers crank them up to ~550+hp. Case would also disable the annoying transmission protection mechanisms that got really annoying when pulling scrapers. John Deere never would do such a thing, not even back in the day and I can pretty much guarantee that has not changed.

I have spent a few minutes looking for it. It was sent to me by a friend who writes for Engineering News Record shortly after they spoke in front of the House of Representatives. I do believe it was H.R. 1587, but I cannot find any of the testimony that the manufacturers gave. All of the Google results have been polluted with results similar to the article in the OP. If anyone else has any luck finding it, please post it. My Google-Fu is letting me down.

The thing I was referring to is how they have lobster tanks with live lobsters in each restaurant, so you know that what you're getting is fresh.
-
@accalia @TimeBandit Maybe we should make downvotes public?

I know about those, but there are better seafood places that also have the tanks.

so their trash vacuums of the sea are fresh. they still eat excrement and ofal, and other nasty things..... no thanks.... i'll stick to something...... more wholesome.

i'd prefer it to be honest.
i've never given out a downvote that i would be ashamed to have public
though it helps that i've never ran a downboat script.

@accalia If your argument against eating lobsters is that they eat shit, wait 'til you hear about fruits and vegetables.

@hungrier ... and bacon.
Pigs ain't exactly the cleanest of animals.

Wait, so fruits and vegetables eat lobsters because lobsters eat shit, or fruits and vegetables eat shit because lobsters eat shit? I'm confused...
-
@hungrier said in Hacking the Deere:
@accalia If your argument against eating lobsters is that they eat shit, wait 'til you hear about fruits and vegetables.
i am aware of that as well, and i don't like it either.
though luckily for me that is not my primary argument against lobster.
my primary argument is simple.... massive food poisoning means i no longer trust any seafood to not give me massive food poisoning.
and wether it's real or merely the nocebo effect i don't really care, seafood is not for me anymore, thanks.

congratulations?
i havent gotten food poisoning from chicken yet, but should it occur, and be significant enough, it's quite possible that animal will join seafood on my "accalia won't eat" list

@accalia nope. Calling something "tofu bacon" doesn't make that thing exist. It's probably just tofu. It definitely isn't bacon.
