Looking for job (USA)

3 years of professional C++ experience, three times that of messing around at home. Also know C#, Java, JavaScript, Rust, Scala, OCaml, F# - though I don't know much of their standard and non-standard libraries and would need to check docs all the time. Know design patterns and agile methodologies and good at teamwork and so on. Preferably in Chicago, but I'm willing to relocate pretty much anywhere in the US. PM for details.
Just in case someone here's recruiting right now, or knows someone who is recruiting, or wants to collect bounty from referral program.
Yes, I'm pretty desperate.
-
Bump.
-
@Gąska What country and what city? If it is in the UK or Spain/Gibraltar I might be able to help you.
Send me a pm.
- ARGH Fuck didn't read the second bit. I thought you was in Europe for some reason.
-
@lucas1 yeah, I'd better put location in title.
-
@Gąska I sent you a PM.
-
Do you have an idea as to where you want to be in the U.S. (East coast, West coast, Midwest, South?) The U.S. is freaking huge, and most people who say they're willing to move "anywhere" don't really have an idea as to how much they would dislike most "anywhere"s.
I'm afraid I'm not in a position to refer you anywhere, but just clarifying for others.
-
@heterodox I can sustain temperatures between -5 and 105 Fahrenheit without problem. To my best knowledge, that covers most of USA and Beverly Hills.
I've already moved five thousand miles from home. A thousand more isn't really much difference.

Probably not the most Northern parts in winter.
-
@TimeBandit I said USA, not Canada
-
@Gąska Clearly you've never been to Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin... that general area.
My brother used to live in Wisconsin. He said a local joke was that -10 is about when you turn off the AC.

Also upstate NY. Lake effect snow is a bitch.
-
@masonwheeler I'm in Illinois right now. The weather right now is like typical Polish spring, except a bit more sunny and a bit more windy. Three feet of snow in the winter won't be a new thing either - except for this closing schools thing, which doesn't happen in Poland.

The temperatures in winter should be a bit lower in Wisconsin, though, due to the continental climate.
Comparison of the average temperatures in winter:

IL must be having a mild winter... I can remember an entire week where the temperature never got above 0F.

Oh wait till you get one of those famous Midwestern thunderstorms. They're fun to deal with
EDIT: I personally enjoy them, tbh. It's pretty exciting.

Occasionally happens in central Europe as well, but it's rather rare. I only remember two days of -30C temperatures in southern Germany during my whole childhood.
-
@asdf the last decade was exceptionally hot in Poland, compared to what it was in the previous 50 years. When I was 5 years old, it was normal for snow to fall in early December and not go away until late March, and now it's a miracle if there's snow for more than a week at a time.

If I remember correctly, that week was also the week we got the -70F (with windchill) low temp.
-
@dcon
Damn, you quoted me before I could correct my mistake. -40C were actually never measured in Germany according to Wikipedia. According to a quick Google search, it must have been -30C.
-
There are lots of opportunities here on the west coast of course. And we even have cities on the east and west coast that start with a familiar
Po
and end with a familiarland
.
-
@asdf Before you made the correction, I thought you were talking about Canada

I think most people base their decision on where to live on quality of life instead of temperatures they can sustain.
-
@heterodox entirety of USA is better quality of life than Poland.
Except for internet. We have motherfucking awesome internet - 300Mbps for $20/mo.
-
Wanna come be an underpaid helpdesk technician? Apparently one of mine is leaving soon.

Almost everyone has motherfucking awesome internet (and cell plans) compared to the US.
-
@dcon For cell plans, be grateful you're not in Canada.
-
@TimeBandit Nor the most Southern parts in summer

I'm sure that in US we get paid more than 5 times what you guys get in Poland right?
Edit: also my speed is for FIOS guaranteed connection speed. 300/300. Yours is 300/30, so sounds like cable, which can be had for cheaper around here.

@dangeRuss sounds about right. After #FightFor15, it's literally true for McDonald's workers, and for other professions it's like, we earn as many złotys as you earn dollars, and current rate is $1/3.95zł.

I think you mean they. You're an American now. Although if you're willing to be paid on par with your Polish counterparts, I don't think you'll have trouble finding a job.
I have been hounded by places like www.vettery.com, et al. Maybe reach out to them, recruiters, etc?
-
Just got an email from these guys too...

Having lived on both coasts (and done a fair amount of exploring along them), there are plenty of places on either side of the country that one could do a lot worse than live in.
If he can survive Chicago winters, that leaves many options open.

@Groaner Over the last year I've repeatedly gotten email after email from recruiters looking for a developer to fill a certain position at a certain company. It's right up my alley, they're looking (and looking and looking, it seems!) for someone with exactly my skillset, and I'm pretty sure I'd do really well there.
But it's in Detroit. So I told them no thanks. Every time.

But think how much money you'd save on housing!
They're not open to remote work, are they? Seems like it's still another five or ten years until this presenteeism meme fades away.

No, otherwise I'd consider it.

WtfCorp IT is out towards Naperville.
-
@Weng Specifically, we have a .Net developer and a development Mangler in Buffalo Grove, a .Net dev in warrenville, a...
Business analyst in my office reporting to India? Wtf?
A SQL developer in warrenville, a database lead in Buffalo Grove, IT QA in Warrenville, a scrum master in warrenville, and a Java developer in Warrenville.
If you want to go to Boston, they have a developer gig listed with no tech stack details. Manufacturing systems. Sounds like you'd be "the guy" for all their custom jank and possibly some WtfStream.
WtfStream also has a junior position open in Utah.
... Wait what? One of the required skills for the junior position. Is "Experience with WtfStream"?

Not sure about IL, but we had a mild winter this year in Michigan's lower pennisula.

Experience with WtfStream
Based on what I've read in the Lounge about WTFCorp in general, this brings to mind the kind of streaming one does after eating bad Mexican food in Tijuana. Do Not Want!

@groo Whooper.
-
Bump. I suck at job searching.
-
@Gąska I feel your pain. I'm unable to move and currently drive to a job thats 90 minutes away - although the pay is decent. I was unemployed for ~3 months before I landed this gig.
Keep up the hunt. LinkedIn. Recruiters (got last job and an updated resume through a recruiter). Learning - CTCI, Pluralsight, etc.
-
@WernerCD how do I sign up at recruiters? Most I can find on Google are employee-searching rather than employer-searching, and the rest look like thinly disguised job boards.
-

Well... I've always simply kept my resume updated on multiple spots (Dice, Monster, CareerBuilder, Indeed, SimpliHired, etc) and kept my LinkedIn active... I get most of the "spam" from those "thinly veiled job boards".
I tend to ignore a majority of the stuff - since most of them are for stuff I'm not interested in (Immediate Opening at a help desk for $15 an hour!!!), stuff I'm not ready for (Immediate opening for Programmer with 20 years experience!!!) or for "elsewhere" (ASAP PROGRAMMER NEEDED IN CHICAGO!!! - I'm unable to move/relocate). I'm interested in certain positions that are nearby/telecommute and those are fewer and further between.
If you get your resume up, keep it updated and are willing to deal with some of the spam... out of the tide, I get a couple a week I'd be interested in if I was willing to move. And that "tide" is without me actively looking.
For recruiters... I got cold-contacted by one via LinkedIn (for my previous job) and I had really good luck with CyberCoders when I was looking last year - a few good interviews including my current job through them.
Depending on where you want to work, there are recruiters for local markets... Couple decent shops out near me that I've had good conversations with (and you can tell a good conversation from a "thinly veiled" call center lol)
Also... where did you get educated? Schools have contacts and help sometimes... my AA was through a local community college and I get a slow stream of possibilities through them (although I'm a bit beyond most of those job offers by now).
-
@WernerCD said in Looking for job (USA):
Also... where did you get educated?
Nowhere. That's a major part of my problem - no degree. I was studying at one Polish university, but had to choose between a green card or completing education.

Did you get a green card in a lottery?
-
@dse no - family visa.
