@dangeRuss The real here is you telling them that is usable.

@dangeRuss Registering to a forum just to criticize their forum choice is kind of a trollish thing

@dangeRuss Lucee? Aw crap.

@dangeRuss No, just, I have to deal with Lucee so I might have to ask questions there.

Oh, cool, didn't know anybody else was still using CF.
We're not actually using Lucee, we use Adobe CF on other project, but I'm thinking of integrating my Java project with Lucee.
Though looking at google groups, 5.x has a ton of bugs, so maybe I'll stick with 4.5 for a while if I do go that route.
-
@dangeRuss We're trying to get off Adobe CF, but we're not yet ready to retire all our CFML applications (new apps are being written in Node and Go). Lucee lets us stop hemorraging money in license fees to keep current.

What is this keep current? Unless you need some new CF features (of which I don't think there are a lot), why not just stay on an older version? I don't think I would migrate an existing app to Lucee, but it's easier with a new app as you don't have to worry about existing code being compatible.

The only thing that it has over our previous horror is that the devs don't hate us.
-
@Magus And I must say, it used to work better. Performance has been steadily degrading back to Discourse levels over time. I think we might even be there now.

Ugh, @dangeRuss, seriously?
It's doing shit like this that makes it seem pretty obvious to an outside observer that we were TR and was in the right as far as The Bannening.
Can we get a community standard to stop behaving toward Discourse in ways that would justify a restraining order if we did that IRL? Hell, I'll even give up
farming likesmaking snarky posts in the 'pocalypse thread forever if it meant I didn't have to be peripherally associated with crap like this any more

In normal forums, that kind of behavior is not ok.

beginning to think the problem isn't with forum software brands, but rather that forum software is just a necessary evil to begin with.

It was bad when we were on AWS. Once we got off there it's been mostly pretty good.
Performance is nothing like discourse, though.

Do we have a list of outstanding grievances somewhere that I can point them to? Or is it just is full of bugs and won't take constructive criticism? Kind of reminds me of the state of the union right now.

If the poster has a vested interest in the site, said poster has a valid reason for bringing up usability concerns. Most of our previous interactions with and all the associated arrogance and indifference are also valid concerns.

@boomzilla It was unstable back then, but now it's just generally slow. I mean, as bad as it was, at least chat/anything worked on mobile. I still have crazy load time just trying to load

, even on desktop. It makes no sense.
-
@Magus Sounds like a local problem. Windows phone? I don't have any performance problems ( ) on desktop or on my...uh...several years old Android phone.
-
@boomzilla said in infects another community:

Then again, with Continuum, a Windows Phone can be a desktop.
-
@boomzilla The chat window now forces itself to a minimum width on phones, causing the X button to be unreachable when the phone is vertical. It also almost never activates the keyboard, a bug we had in our earliest time here, that eventually was fixed.
Additionally, it takes around a minute for the site to load sufficiently that I can bring up the side menu to log in, at which point my phone has warmed noticeably.
There is no reason for us to have any of these issues, since we didn't have them six months ago.
-
@Groaner
Except, how many of our Anti-Discourse Apostles are actively using Discourse on a community they're active in at the moment? And how many of the "performance issues" / "usability concerns" that are on our magical list are both (1) still relevant and (2) actually likely to occur on a fully supported installation.Given how NodeBB wasn't a magic performance bullet here, either (we had very similar performance issues while we were on shared hosting, before the last migration), and that I've never seen much in the way of legitimate, standard end user performance issues on meta.d, I think it's reasonable to presume that a significant percentage of the problems we experienced were due to inadequate resourcing of the forum. Which isn't something that makes for a great general case of "oh this is why Discourse is terrible" - maybe it's a point in terms of TCO, but I haven't seen anyone make a case for "you can't even throw hardware at it to make it run well".
I get it, we all have our hobby horses to belittle. And there were definitely some things Discourse did/does that were different in a way that offends my OCD. But in most cases, TDWTF users aren't going to have a huge overlap with "standard end users of the target forum community", and for us to go around stalking new Discourse installs and being after-the-fact stalkers to come in and belittle their forum choice right after they switch... that's just bad juju.

What kind of phone, again? Which browser? I use chrome on Android and, like I said before, it's not a problem.
