Should downvotes be public?
-
NodeBB has an option to allow all votes to be public. When turned on, users can click on the vote total and see who up and down voted a post. Since this is a change in something people may have believed to be private, please weigh in if you have feelings one way or the other on this.
Personally, FTR, I'm fine with my down vote history being public.

Me too.
-
@boomzilla Given this community, I never expected that downvotes would always be private. I also don't expect most people to use the feature all that much.
Let votes be public, for all I care.
-
They are public right now anyway.
-
My downvote history is by no means trivial, but I most certainly did not form it under the pretension that it was private - make it as public as you like.
-
I Stylished that stuff away:
I found I was worrying too much about how many votes I got and from who, so decided to
display: none;
the problem
-
I'm fine with it, it might have been better to do this differently, but it's going to be too painful to actually use much anyways.
-
I have always been in the camp of not caring if my downvotes are public. Now that the implementation of this feature has been FUBAR'd, we might as well leave them public. It is not like you can unring a bell.

Not with that attitude.
-
@loopback0 Have a downvote.
This is fun. It would have been pointless to fuck with them on random people I like before this. :)

Downvote.
Leave op to wonder why you downvoted?
-
@sloosecannon Do we get downvote notifications now?
-
@Polygeekery Nah.
-
@Polygeekery I assume not, but you know what happens when you buttume
-
@loopback0 Shit. That would have been more fun.
@ben_lubar, can you add that as a feature request to your next forum update that will go horribly wrong? Thanks.

It makes a cloud out of you and me?

Shit. That would have been more fun.
Except in the downvotes topic.

@Luhmann AaaS?

As a side effect, the new pop-up window is annoying and I liked the old one better.

You could urinate on a bell, though.
-
I'm fine with this.
And since that vast majority (by anyone's definition) of forum downvotes are from @Polygeekery and xe's fine with xem being public, I say that's a majority vote.
Also, if we do make them public, I hope there's a "Hall of Shame" page, where you can see the most downvoted posts.

We already have that.

This is fun. What else can I offend @fbmac with?

The old one is still there if you hover on it... On desktop.
On mobile, you can no longer show the old (tiny) "popup window" without showing new one.
-
@Polygeekery said in Should downvotes be public?:

He might start deleting the downvotes.
-
By the way, if i cast a vote, is it possible to cancel it?
As I understand it now, you can change between +1 and -1 but can never go back to 0.
-
@Adynathos said in Should downvotes be public?:

Yes just click it again.
-
I already made my opinion pretty clear in the other thread: I don't think it's a good idea.
But, for the record, I'd like to say that I object to showing downvotes on a general basis, not because I want(ed) to keep mine "a secret".
-
Now we just need the ability to see any person's upvotes and downvotes, not just our own.
And a notification on downvote.
Then we shall be as gods!
-
I'm all for it, at least for now. It should remove superstitions, and I like to see who's been around voting for stuff.

I meant being able to see all of a person's upvotes/downvotes (via their profile).
We can do this for ourselves, but not for others currently.

I vote yes

The number of downvotes that any particular post has has always been public. Just count the number of upvoters and then subtract the post's score from that.

Guess if you'd known @ben_lubar would be the unilateral decision-maker on this one you wouldn't have needed bother to create this topic.
And no one else would have needed bother to contribute.
-
yay pubic downvotes
also this while i was trying to find a different image
-
Bug report: the modal "voted" popup's overlay shifts everything over a few pixels.
Also, why the hell is it a modal fancy fly in instead of just a word bubble coming out of the number?
-
@Lorne-Kates My understanding is its just reusing what mods already see, only for all us normal people.
-
Also also, can we add a class or a data-attribute or something to indicate that a post has downvotes?
The only way I can see doing that is with javascript, parsing out the data attribute that has the list of votes, counting them, then comparing it to the actual vote count.
