Seriously, Austin High School

  • Your school's entire website is a single image with a gigantic image map (a .gif image, at that), your athletics page on the site has some insane 10000x10000 element on the page and was generated from Microsoft Word, and you expect me to take your webmastering course next year for a technology credit.

What do I see wrong with this?

    -_-

  • Both of your links go to the same place.

Maybe the webmastering course is so that the students can fix their pages.

  • Neither Firefox nor Opera show the image for me. I just get a blank page with sparsely placed bits of text, coupled with a large horizontal and vertical scroll-space. IE shows the page in a more suitable way.

  • It's kinda typical that HTML files generated by Microsoft Office are only compatible with Microsoft's Internet browser.

It seems the way the school has done it is talk to there IT dept and say "We need a web site. Do it!".

...and their IT department was staffed by idiots?

  • Well, they certainly have absolutely no knowledge of authoring a webpage, and they probably had a week to complete the job.

So they just did it in the package they knew, and then did "Save as Microsoft HTML".

  • The athletics page is written in VML - no one uses VML except Microsoft.

The 'home page' (http://www.austinschools.org/campus/austin/index.htm - with the big maps - "powered by templatekingdom.com") is just dumb. I guess they didn't want it indexable by Google.

I wouldn't do a web design course there! Whoever did either of those pages didn't have a clue about web design and they weren't even done badly in a consistent way. You'd have thought the school would have got the web design teacher(s) to do the web site, so either they did and the teachers are useless, or the school administrators are stupider than stupid, either way, I wouldn't go there.

  •  The best part of the site? Based on a design by Tom Jacobs that links to http://www.jacobstom.net/ which is a parking spot domain for sale.

also why have each sports team have their own domain??

Only for the important ones like football and baseball.

I bet it's so they can say them over the loud speaker and people will remember them.  And considering ladies lacross has one as well, I bet it's only for the teams that have someone who's willing to devote their time to creating and maintaining it.

FWIW, I've never heard them mention it.  Also, if you'd like to take a look at the "old" versions of the site, I daresay they're even worse.  Or worser.

Interestingly those sites are much better than the main page. Even girls lax website, which is supposingly maintained by the high school girls, is a lot better than the main site. My guess is that they let the school kids design and make the school site in order to learn how to do it. But it seems like they haven't been having very good guidance. Maybe they should ask the girls from lacross to help them out.
