  • Everyone here is used to my ranting (even if most of you probably don't like it), so here's another e-adventure I recently had:

I had a NetGame account which I've used to purchase nCash. That meant I gave them real money using PayPal and they gave me virtual cash which I could use in their games. I'm out $100, but at least I got an excellent armor to fight against magic monsters (hey, my hobby is none of your business so STFU)... Anyway, I usually fill in fake details when I register online and I decided that I'm going to change my NetGame account details to contain my real info, just in case something went wrong and someone tried to steal my account/nCash. To do that, I had to go to their website, login, then fill in all the previous details (including the username & password I just used to login a couple of seconds before), but I couldn't remember what I used when I registered. I sent them a message about it (you can't email, you have to use their "1:1 customer inquiry" web interface which is AWFULLY broken and only works in IE) and I got a reply, asking me for all the details that I could remember. I told them what I remembered and a few days later, I got another reply, containing all my current account info, so now I could edit my profile and change it to the real info. The message from them contained the following: Account id, Password, Name, Email, Gender, Birthday, Secret Q, Secret A.

Here are the WTFs: (1) I had to know all the previous account details to change them and I had to change ALL of them - I even had to change my password. (2) When I told them a few details I remembered, I got back all the details about the account, including the password in plain text and the secret answer to the "secret" question ((3) which, of course, is never "secret," it's just a "security question" but many people fail to make the difference between secret and security). (4) The account details were, in fact, my real details! This time TRWTF was on me, because I've tried many combinations of details that I use when I register on online forms, except for the real stuff! (5) Most of their websites don't work in anything except for IE.

The game I play is Hero Online and the game's forum works in Firefox, but it's embeded in the main web page using an (6) IFRAME and every time you click on something in the forum or you hit the browser's back button, (7) you have to wait for the IFRAME to load and the page "jumps" to the top. (8) The links don't change color if they're visited so you have to remember wether you've read a topic or not. The forum (the part that's in the IFRAME) has a (9) JavaScript that makes sure you're opening the forum from within the main page, so you can't just ctrl+click on a thread in FireFox to open it in a new tab; of course, opening it in a new window also doesn't work, because the browser tries to load the thread as an individual page, the JavaScript notices that it's not in the main page so it redirects you to the home page. Also, their website/forum is mostly useless without JavaScript, so I have to enable JavaScript, go to the forum page I'm interested in, disable JavaScript, open each thread in a new tab and then enable JavaScript, so I don't accidentally click on something in the forum. (10) Did I mention that the forum's searh is also broken? If you make a search (you have to wait about a minute to get the results) you can only see the first page of the results, because going to the second page will just throw an error like "invalid search query" so that limits the extremely slow search to only one page of results. If you don't do the disable JavaScript trick to open all the threads in new tabs, you're screwed because if you visit a thread in the same IFRAME and hit back, you have to wait another minute for the results to load.

Nice game, it has a few bugs I'm willing to get over, it has tons of typos I'm willing to get over, but their website is just AWFUL !!! I'm going to contact them using "1:1 customer inquiry" (because they don't even leave a phone number for contact) and ask them if they'd want me to fix some of the WTFs in their pages, for free. I'm actually willing to do that, just to be able to use the website properly. I guess that would be another WTF for me regarding this...

Thanks! I can't believe you actually bothered to read all that...

I haven't got anything better to do for the moment :-)

I'm working as on-shore "configuration manager" for an off-shored project. Indians (somewhere, India) deliver their code via a versioned Sharepoint Document library (London, UK). When a component is finished, they notify me and I synchronize my local folders (Brussels, Belgium) with Sharepoint. Then I perform a WinMerge to see what's changed and upload the changes in Rational Clearcase (Paris, France).

All hail the process. I spent most of my time waiting :-(

Off course, the Indians have direct access to a terminal server with Clearcase installed, actually running in Paris. But this was deemed too complicated

And I'm currently working on a app configuration management module in an application written for a company from another country.

  • TRWTF is that with all these problems, you continue to give these people money. They should have no excuse not to switch to one of the perfectly good free forum systems out there. If they cared about their customers, they would.

  •  it does sound like a true wtf.

The real WTF is that annoying GIF you put up. The flickering message in it is making me sick.

This was true until you made it our business...  Still, I'll personally wait for the blameless one to throw the first stone.  Looks like I'll be waiting a pretty long time...
