Email confirmation?
-
When I logged in today, I got a toaster asking me to click to confirm my email and it wouldn't let me post until I got that email and clicked the link. Now, I know what a confirmation email is and why it's needed e.g. when registering, but why did suddenly decide that I needed to confirm again my email? I did not change anything at all on my profile recently.
If there was some good reason for that request (I'm using several computers, so maybe it was doing some Google-shit where every time I log in using a different one I get spammed with warning emails?), then at the very least the email (and/or the toaster) should be more explicit. Currently the email says "Thank you for registering with What the Daily WTF?! To fully activate your account, we need to verify that you own the email address you registered with." and when clicking the link it says "Thank you for validating your email. Your account is now fully activated."
-
@remi it's necessary to prevent sockpuppets
-
@sockpuppet7 Well then it should say so (or something more user-friendly to that effect).
Getting such a message & email out of the blue, and referring only to my registration (as if it was a new one) made me momentarily wonder about hacking and various other Bad Thoughts.
Real World analogy: if for any reason your bank needs to replace you card, they will not send you a letter saying "thanks for using Bank, here is you card". They will say "here is your new card, you can use it like the previous one", i.e. they know you're already a member and don't treat you as a new one.

Oh, hang on, apparently it's a new feature coming with the latest update (and thus I guess all existing users are asked to confirm even though that doesn't make sense because... raisins?).
My fault then. It was clearly written "ab13ab12b3ef312fd", how could have I missed that?

I haven't been asked
-
@RaceProUK So thinks I am a bot?
Edit: did you log in again, or just came back to an already logged session? Since the update, I accessed the forum through at least 2 devices and did not get the email request, but I was already logged in. Only this morning did I use a different computer on which I hadn't logged for some time and thus had to log in again, and got the email.

This feature is old, IIRC it was present when we first tested nodebb. It was there as a setting, and probably some admin just turned it on.

@remi
Hm, I haven't gotten it either, and I just tested with a logout and log back in. (Though I guess I didn't close my browser in between, will science after this post and report back).I know I did e-mail confirm back in the DiscoDays... did you register back then, or are you a more recent convert to the cause of goodness, light, and s?
-
@remi FWIW, I got it this morning and had not accessed the site with any other devices between last night and now. I was still logged in, though I closed the browser between then and now.

Existing session.

No, and yes. But @Parody got it and I think he was already there in the glorious DiscoDays. @fbmac also, I think (I assuming that he got it since he mentioned it in another thread).
At the moment all signs point to random, that's always good news :-p

I visited the site about 11 hours ago and closed the tab some time after that. I just opened the site in a new tab now and got the popup asking me to confirm my email.
I've been logged in the whole time.
-
I get the "Lost connection, please wait" toaster every time my phone goes to sleep. Apparently, that was sufficient to trigger the verification toaster. And for the record, I have been TDWTFing since about a year before the great CS- migraine. (I started to type "migration." Autocomplete thought "migraine" was the best way to finish the word. I think it was right.)

I turned on email verification last night and marked the first few pages of "most reputation" as verified.

I'm on page 1.

I are confused. I would think almost 145k reputation would be on "the first few pages," but I got the toaster. OTOH, I haven't responded to the email, but I'm not blocked from posting, which I understand some people were. So either the "mark as verified" function only half works, or the actual verification process doesn't do what it's supposed to.
-
@HardwareGeek Something weird happened, because you could post, yet got the toaster.
You're probably doing something wrong

You are verified:
It's possible that you were online while I was going through and marking people as verified, so you got the toaster before I got to your entry on the list.

I would probably have gone for the most recent active users rather than the most reputation (or some combination of the two to ween out bots that might have joined very recently), but... doesn't really matter, and it seems to explain most of what people have been seeing. Thanks!

Also, I meant to ask earlier but forgot. What about certain very active users with very low reputation? Did you mark them, too? Asking for a
friendenemy.Oh, and a certain very long-time
nutuser we all know and love (to make fun of).

@ben_lubar said in Do email verification help with spam?:
I enabled it because a lot of the sockpuppet accounts were using obviously fake email addresses at real domains and I didn't want us to get blacklisted for spamming large companies with emails about the kind of stuff we post here.
If your account is affected because you gave an invalid email address, you can still log in and change it to a valid one. There's lots of free email hosting on the internet, and I know that a few users use the kind where you don't even use a password.
-
@izzion Ah. I saw that this morning but had no idea what it was about and haven't been back.
Some fucker posted that shit in the garage and I moved it to general but obviously it really belongs in meta. I hate people.
Fuck you all. Oh, wait, this isn't the status thread. Anyways...

If you verified your email address, it probably sent the notification to both sessions and you only clicked on one. It's safe to ignore the second time.
