The New Coke Math

  • Ok, so I do the stupid coke rewards thing and get a free coke for every 7 or 8 I drink. Well today, I get this email  from them:

    <FONT face=Helvetica><FONT face=Arial color=#000000 size=2>Great news: we've made big improvements.
    No More Daily Code Limits</FONT><FONT style="FONT: 24px helvetica, sans-serif; COLOR: #ffffff"></FONT></FONT>
<FONT face=Helvetica color=#666666 size=2>Starting on February 16th, there's something refreshingly new at My Coke Rewards. The 10 code entries-per-day limit is gone. Now you can enter your codes when you want — up to 120 points per week.*

And with the new Weekly Points Tracking Tool it's easy to see how many points you've already entered and how many more points you can still earn for the week.</FONT>

    <FONT face=Helvetica color=#666666 size=2></FONT>

<FONT face=Helvetica color=#666666 size=2>For those who don't participate, codes come bottle tops and on the inside of twelve-packs and cases and each one is worth a few points depending on what it comes from, the smallest being three points from a single bottle.</FONT>

    <FONT face=Helvetica color=#666666 size=2></FONT>

<FONT face=Helvetica color=#666666 size=2>So previously, the limit was 10 codes per day * (at least) 3 points per code * 7 days in a weak = 210 points (or more) you could redeem in a week.
Their great news is that they effectively cut the amount of points I can get in a week by almost 50%?   I don't drink anywhere near that much Coke, but WTF?</FONT>

  • It's all how you want to spin it.

You can now enter all 120 points in a single day where before you couldn't.

Before you could enter 210 points in a week, now just 120 points.

Depending on how you do things, one of these could benefit you, the other hurts you.

  • But you can now enter four times as many codes in a single day.  Personally, I'd rather do all my code entry at one sitting (per week, month, quarter) than be forced to spread it out among several days.  It'd be a little nicer if they just converted straight to the 210 (or more) points per week limit, but like you I'd never approach it anyway.

You should be thanking  the Ministry of Plenty Coca-Cola. Or are you forgetting that the chocolate ration has been increased to twenty grams?

The way I see it, there's probably two kinds of people redeeming points.  The people like you and I that redeem a few a week and get small stuff.  This change won't really affect us either way.  The other type are the people who drink lots and probably scavenge for caps trying to get the biggest prizes.  The biggest current prize is a $200 gift card which requires 8000 pts.  This new limit extends the amount of time it would take from 38 weeks and one day (if you collect nothing but individual caps, less if you collect codes worth more points per code) to 66 weeks and 5 days.

  •  Is anything worth 12 or more points?  If you were used to redeeming those, you're really screwed by the new rules.
