"IT Work $15 / hour" on the jobs board; is this in fucking Zimbabwe?

  • You guys are kidding right? I thought it was a non-WTF job board...

  • On second thought, they would require a tie in Zimbabwe.

  • What's wrong with $15/hr? How much are you expecting? What is a "normal" IT hourly pay over there? How much does a grocery salesman make? What is minimum wage?

  • Zimbabwe? I should hope not: Z$15 == US$0.002 ... for now. By tomorrow, expect that to be even less. You'd make more money scavenging for dropped bills on the streets.

If it was just a helpdesk position I would understand... BUT they also want you to know how to program in python, perl AND php.  I am willing to bet they are looking to lay off a few developers and saddle the new guy with a crapload of junk to maintain.  Either that or they want to hire someone from outside hawaii to avoid paying the local high living expenses.

  •  I got paid $15/hour during college to work help desk at an insurance company (part time).  That was pretty damn good money for somebody still in college

  • @rohypnol said:

As a student, I get paid $20/hr to do general computer repair, which is a bargain in comparison to people who actually do this stuff as a business.

I've never worked at one, but people at the local HEB (cheap, generic grocery store, for people outside its realm) that I know have pay rates between $7 and $9 per hour.

I'm not sure, but I think it's about $5.50/hr, but I hear our new president wants to raise it to $9 or so.

$0.002? Where have you been these last couple of years? An army private earns Z$30 trillion+board a month now, and hardly anyone in the private sector will touch the local currency at all.

I hear they are looking for someone to convert their banking software to 64 bit, though.

Better hope they did that before now or the government would overflow into the negative...not that there is much difference between that and the current regime...

I had a dream the other week, in which I collected a total of $10.20 by picking up dropped coins in a mall.  Odd.

Maybe you need to be more observant in your life because you are missing chances for easy money?  Then again, I wouldn't trust any interpretation of my own dreams as they are rather messed up.  I certainly wouldn't be wanting to fight off toasters and vacuum cleaners coming to life to exact their reveng on the human race.

  • I once passed through this town in Germany.  The road signs on the entrance and exit to town were amusing.

I'll do one better... I once found about 5 quid in a coke vending machine. It turns out that if your coin gets stuck inside the machine, a lot of punching and kicking will return not only your money but everyone else's that simply walked away. I guess being easily irritated can have its advantages. Just be careful not to have the machine fall on you.

  •  Ummm, that's not that little.

Here, you can expect $10 - $13/hr for general computer repair skills (you know, reloading windows, virus cleanup, router setup) from any of the local computer hellholes.  High-end computer professionals get paid about $30/hr tops.  Most people with CS degrees are working for ~$20/hr.  Did I mention that'sall in $CDN?  It's pay like that that had me doing a stint as an Electrican Apprentice (Lucky for me I got hired by somewhere that pays decently, it's the only place in town that pays like this and we attract people who will drive 2 hours a day to work for the pay/environment).  For reference, minimum wage is $8.75 here and this town is one of the top five or so (we like to pretend we're #1, which is definitely BS) technology employers in this country.

Just thought you Bush supporters down south should know before you come up here to live in Bush-lite (tm) land.

Wow, it's like when one of those Japanese soldiers emerges from the jungle of some small uninhabited pacific island sixty years later and they still haven't heard that WWII is over.

NEWSFLASH:  There was an election, dude!  V-USA day is here!  The revolution triumphed, the forces of evil have been vanquished and the population has been liberated from the grip of the tyrannical overlord!

Or to put it another way: the whole of the USA is "Bush-lite-land" these days :-) :-) :-)

    No, no, I guess I wasn't clear.

    USA = Obamaland.

Canada = Bush-lite land (for now), as Harper (the Prime Minister) spent so much time up Bush's ass.  There was a (thank God failed) attempt at even instituting a DMCA here (but worse, actually...) and there's plenty more made-in-the-USA laws he keeps trying to implement for Bush.  Perhaps we'll be lucky and he'll just do whatever the current US president wants, so we might get some sanity after he speaks with Obama.  Or maybe he'll just keep doing what Bush wanted here.  We'll see...

Seriously.  I was paid $15/hr to do L1 help desk in 1997... and that was just what the consulting agency paid ME.  The customer was paying much more.

Are IT services priced like technology goods now?  The latest models are expected to be faster and more feature packed, but sell for the same price?

Federal minimum wage is $6.55/hour as of 2008. States can set higher levels.

The DMCA was enacted under President Clinton.  In general, the biggest supporters of DRM in the US are Democrats.  Bush and Obama are actually fairly close in terms of ridiculous economic policy.  The only difference is that Obama favors a cowardly foreign policy.  Regardless, your country is probably more fucked following Obama's lead than Bush's, sadly.  And considering the arrogance of both, don't be surprised when Obama starts forcing US policy on Canada.

Its way undervalued for an IT professional in the US.

    How much are you expecting?

I'm sure most IT pros expect 55-65k entry-level if they live in a major market (seattle, silicon valley, washington d.c. are major IT markets). Experienced IT pros would settle for nothing less than 100k per year... or in specific niches even higher... $100-250/hour.

How much does a grocery salesman make?

    Probably about 5.75/hour

    What is minimum wage?

    I think its 5.75
