Let's all play 'Guess What the Hedgehog is Saying in Japanese!'
-
The first phrase is:
元素の結晶、元素の妖怪。
And we already have our first guesses!
@accalia said in Once Again, Everyone's Favorite Game!:
Crystal of element, elementary youkai.
or.... possibly a better translation would be
"Element of Crystal, Element of Ghost"
Close, but no cigar :P
@Lorne-Kates said in Once Again, Everyone's Favorite Game!:
"Fuck you, give me yens"
…no.
Hint #1: It's got nothing to do with Pokémon.
-
"Please release me from this endless torture!"?
-
元素の結晶、元素の妖怪。
元素: げんそ: chemical element
の: possesive particle
結晶: けっしょう: seems to be both crystal (or crystalization as a verb) but also "fruits (of labor, union)". For instance, "愛の結晶" means "fruits of love", or children.
妖怪: ようかい: ghost, apparition, a kind of japanese folk monster."Element's crystal, element's ghost"?

@Kian said in Let's all play 'Guess What the Hedgehog is Saying in Japanese!':
"Element's crystal, element's ghost"?
So close! The only thing you have wrong is the interpretation of の. In this case, it's not the possessive particle, but it does modify the noun 元素.
-
Based on (what is probably entirely wrong) breaking up of items in the phrase in Google Translate, might it be something of "Crystal of demonic (youkai) origin"/demon crystal?
-
@RaceProUK This topic is already the third result on google for this phrase.
-
@RaceProUK That's strange, since that seems to be the approach Accalia tried, and she was close too. So, if we consider it as turning the noun into an adjective, 元素の would have to be similar to "elemental".
"Elemental crystal, elemental ghost"?

Actually, working from this, could that possibly be a transliteration of The Dark Crystal?

Technically "Elemental crystals, elemental ghosts", but Japanese doesn't have a separate noun form for for plurals.
Therefore,
-
@RaceProUK :D What made the translation even harder is I don't know what that means in English either. I mean, obviously I understand the words individually, I just don't know what that could be referring to.
-
@Kian I'll be honest, they're both phrases I made up ;)
Well, technically, I use 'Elemental Yōkai', but 'yōkai' does mean 'ghost', so it's still correct.

Could be applicable for things like Spirits of Air, Spirits of Fire, etc...
-
@e4tmyl33t Fire, Metal, Wood, Earth, Water, but yeah, that sort of thing.

eeeh... ghosts are a kind of yokai, but so is this guy:
and this thing:
So today we've learned that if you're babbling nonsense anyway, you don't have a leg to stand on insisting on one particular translation.
-
@Yamikuronue I just watch my anime with subtitles on.
-
@Yamikuronue There's a reason why, in context, I stick with
yōkai
;)

Yokai is like some kind of minor demon thing, and includes @accalia because it's so varied. The word that translates best from the English word 'Ghost' to Japanese is 'Yuurei' or, if you don't want it to be creepy, just 'rei'.
Yes, yes,
-
@Magus Can I be a yōkai too?
-
@RaceProUK Oh possibly, I only mentioned her because of the occasional kitsune comments. I don't have a good knowledge of Japanese mythical creatures, but they certainly seem like a varied group.

I use jisho.org for my japanese translations, and according to it youkai can be translated to ghost, so I'm sticking with it: http://jisho.org/search/妖怪
Languages don't have perfect one-to-one mappings for words and concepts, so it's possible for youkai to translate to ghost in English, while ghost more accurately translating to yuurei when going the other way. Jisho does in fact suggest that one first when you search for the English word ghost: http://jisho.org/search/ghost

@Yamikuronue
I'm pretty sure that Sesshomaru would object to being classified as a "minor" demon :P
-
@Kian It's more about what the people you're talking to are thinking. Depending on the context, if you're translating for western people, you might translate youkai as ghost, fairy, magical beast, apparition, or several other things. But if your goal is getting the general meaning across to someone, apparition seems like a more fitting word than ghost.

There's no Japanese translation of "haggis" in any of my reference works, so I came up with the phrase "uragaeshi no hitsuji".
Literally "inside-out sheep".

Sounds appetizing, in the Japanese, since I don't speak it.
