That's some weird modeling on the comic frame. White, but without borders.
Also admit that the first thing you did was to try for a panty shot.

I didn't do that (first)!

Actually the first thing I did was trying to see if the laptop was properly resting on the table or if there is a minute gap below it (there doesn't seem to be one). What does that say about me?

Seems like the modeling program didn't allow placing text on transparent rectangles?

This time, you are the only one.

Seems like the modeling program didn't allow placing text on transparent rectangles?
The text is its own 3d model, and the bald guy's phrase is actually deeper than the imaginary frame, so I don't think that's the reason. Besides, I don't think the walls of the frame would need to be so huge.
Probably just someone clearing the borders other than the visible comic frame and forgetting to reduce the thickness.
-
I dunno, I like the white frame. Makes it feel like you're peeking at the scene through a fourth-wall window.
-
@Zecc oh, huh, I could've sworn it has zero x/y thickness and a lot of z-thickness. That makes a bit more sense.
-
Seriously?
-
-
I think there's actually 'official' community-made 3D versions of many comics as a result of either this comic or another one.

i'm sure there are plenty of 3d renders of that comic.
some are interactive!
some even haven sound!
I'm not aware of any that have force feedback capabilities, but it wouldn't surprise me if there were.

I'm not aware of any that have force feedback
Oh I force feed your mom in 3D all the time.

ah. good to know. Tell her i lover her and ask her to call when she gets a moment.

The high number of polygons is needed to give a smooth cell shading effect, if you'd skimp on them you would get all kinds of differing line widths.
It's amazing it works so well in the browser really.

The laptop is actually slightly embedded in the table I think. Not going to download the model to check though.

So this is a fan art, not Randall's original?
If so, nicely done. Waiting for Randall to do one where it seems like a simple one panel joke, but turns into a VR-enabled flight simulation over his world.

How'd they get the borders to work from any angle?

Cylinders with sphere ends?

It appears to be a smaller object rendering on top of the larger object it's completely contained inside. How?
-
@ben_lubar It seems you didn't follow the link I posted about cel shading.
The method used in this scene is to use the space in between a white "fill" model and a slightly larger inside-out black "outline" model. Because polygons are commonly rendered only from a single side you can view the fill model where it's nearest to you, but when looking past the fill the outline model's polygons are facing your viewpoint so they're rendered to the final black outline.
Using this method takes a whole bunch of effort to draw interior lines; all volumes where you want to draw an outline need to be carefully separated and placed so their Z-order is right.

I have trouble viewing cross-eyed pictures. It's much easier to me to see parallel pictures.
When I try to focus my eyes closer the pictures become a blurry mess really quickly.

@Zecc The article says it happens often, so I just have to comply with the statistic.

It's definitely trickier to get the hang of cross-eyed viewing, but once you do there's effectively no limit on how large of a scene can be viewed with that method (unlike the parallel eyes method which limits you to the distance your eyes can comfortably diverge, which only allows for small scenes).
The way I managed it was by going cross-eyed first and then letting my eyes drift back toward their natural positions, trying to lock in on the scene right as it overlapped correctly. With some more practice I was able to hit the correct angles pretty easily going into cross-eyed instead of going past it and them dialing back out.

huh. and here i thought i was the only one who believes the reason why they're always drawn as stick figures is because they're all nudists, only wearing clothes when Randal explicitly draws them on.

might seem to lend credence, but on the other hand,
. https://xkcd.com/157/yep. the first one supports my position.
you seem to think the second one refutes but i'm not seeing how.
