Error'd: beautiful city???

If you are fortunate enough not to have been to Croydon, then the evening Standard summarises it excellently: "It is a place that gives concrete jungles a bad name, an urban nightmare famed for its tram system and some of the ugliest architecture outside the old Soviet bloc."

Also see http://www.croydononline.org/history/origins/croydon.asp for this lovely image:

Even more impressively if you click on the link the job is not in Croydon at all. It is in "London, London, City of (GB)"

Acutally, that bit could be a minor WTF.  The company's website gives their address as
Registered Office: dotMailer, 18th Floor, No. 1 Croydon, 12-16 Addiscombe Rd, CR0 0XT | Company Registration Number: 3762341
... so it's probably the sidebar ad was right and the location on the job page that's inaccurate.

  • Screenshot link broken - here it is...

grrrr I am feeling especially dumb now for my own wtf... and frustrated that I can't edit posts

You can, you just need to travel back in time a bit because you can only do within +-30 seconds of the post.

I used to look down on CS, but now that you tell me it can let you edit a post 30 seconds before you even make it, I'm actually quite impressed.  Whether it's AI that can predict what you're going to post before you know it yourself, or actual telepathic mind-reading through a worm-hole to the future, I can understand if the effort they put into it left a little less time for niceties like the UI!

    FTFY

TRWTF is "+-" which should be "±". The "~" means "very approximately equal to" which is a more rough version of "≈" which means "approximately equal to".

  • Strange, "within ~30 seconds" makes sense to me. It means: "within approximately 30 seconds".

Makes more sense than "Within plus or minus 30 seconds", because you can't be within a negative value of something.

  • It's how we sometimes say approximately in dutch; "plusminus". Apparently this doesn't translate well.

You guys do realise that Croydon is in London, right?

It's not in " London, City of (GB)" though.

And it's certainly not a city, let alone a beautiful one.

    Ah I get it now:

Well, one of the meaning of plus or minus  is exactly that, altough I now think it's far less frequently used in Englishand the shorthand "+-" is never used for "plusminus" on the internet.
