@El_Heffe Well, I mean, he's part of history now, so that's gotta account for something, right?

Is IT OK to punch Comic Sans with a Hitler? Could you create a helpful website where we could learn answer to that question?

I've never really got the hate for Comic Sans.

It's not like it is Papyrus…

Ditto. I've asked just about every time the subject has come up, and I have yet to hear a case against it that amounts to anything more than either "I think it looks funny" or "a self-appointed arbiter of taste whom I inexplicably follow like a god thinks it looks funny".
-
@da-Doctah It's worse when people use it because they think it looks funny.
Like, I've heard from a lecturer that he uses comic sans to make the slides look less serious, more approachable and funny. I'm sorry - if your lecture is fucking boring, unstructured and goes over the head of most students, partly because they're all asleep, the font isn't going to fix that. (Neither is the use of red text on light blue, btw).
And if you've got a good lecture with interesting and relevant material ... well, you deserve to have a bit of self respect and should thus use a real font.

If you're going to use red and blue, you need another colour to act as a barrier. If only I could think of a good example...
-
@RaceProUK Hmm, let's try.

@Jaloopa said in The creator of Comic Sans says its the best thing he ever did:

i think core of the hate comes from the use of comic sans, a decidedly playful and non-professional font, in places where the font itself is inappropriate, in places where a more serious serif font face would be more suited, such as the war memorial mentioned in the movie.
The rest of the hate seems to be a feedback loop of "we hate the font because it's inferior and it's inferior because we hate it..... Now.... Where have i heard that argument before? (/me looks scathingly at the time period in and around January First, 1863)
Of course that's just a conjecture based on what i have been able to observe through many an anti-comic sans rant. I may be way off base.... but i don't think i am.

Serifs are serious? You mean those pointless little sticky-outy bits of decorative scaffolding and floral gewgawery that serve mainly to make it more difficult to distinguish similar characters such as I, l, 1 and |?
You want to hate on a font for being non-professional, save your hate for Courier Elite.
-
@da-Doctah I see a lot more serifs etched into old-ass buildings than non-serifs
-
@bb36e Serifs: the number one choice of old-ass graffiti taggers.

Doesn't the "I" in Comic Sans have serifs?

That's what makes it comical.
-
@da-Doctah On the subject of serifs, a quick Google search has led me to the conclusion that, when it comes to readability, serif vs sans serif is a complete non-issue: a lot of studies have found no difference, and of those that claim serif is better, most have been roundly criticised for serious methodology issues that render the conclusion invalid.
Basically, use a font that's easy to read.

When they wrote "Happy New Year" in Comic Sans?

properly done serifs, such as can be found in Times New Roman, are serious in the proper settings.

Times New Roman (Serifs)
Calibri (MS Word 2016 Default Font, Sans Serif (mostly))
Consolas (Fixed width Serif)
Arial (Sans)
hmm.... no, i think serifs actually help to disambiguate those similar letters.
so.... i'm sorry but i don't think your point holds water.

Everyone has a different opinion of what is "easy to read". Hence the argument over serif vs sans serif.

And that's why I ignore everyone and instead listen to typography experts ;)

I heard somewhere (wikipedia?) that it's also why comic book people don't like it: Apparently comic fonts are supposed to be in all-caps, yet still with some uppercase/lowercase distinction (which includes the uppercase 'I' having serifs while the lower case 'I' isn't supposed to).
Comic Sans is not all-caps because its designer knows there are some lines not to cross, so its only capital 'I' is the actual capital one, so it's natural that it would have serifs.

I don't know. It's ambiguous.
Could just be a dude from India wanted a non-structured way to present symbols from 1000 years ago.
Or it could be a confused neo-Nazi that thinks Hitler came up with the symbol.

Computers were invented so that people with the drawing skills of a 5-year-old could design signs that don't look like they were drawn by a 5-year-old.
