A brief detour

With the bus strike going on here in Ottawa, I drove my wife in to work this morning. I just picked up a GPS from Garmin, so I thought I'd bring it along. Reset the trip meter before I left the house, drove around 30km, and got home to:
As you can see, on the way home I took a brief 5350km detour. Since it was pretty snowy today, I doubt I got up above 70km/h anywhere on the trip, so it must have been a very fast detour. The WTF, of course, is that the max speed is obviously wrong. :P

I received one for Christmas last year. My father bought it in Michigan and shipped it to me in California. Unfortunately, the charger for it was broken, so I couldn't use it. I tried to return it to Circuit City using the receipt for it, but because it had been more than 14 days since my father purchased it, they wouldn't take it back. So I contacted Garmin and the sent me a replacement charger and now it works.
So I used it for a couple of days, and then while playing with its various features, found where various things are logged, such as max speed and previous locations you visited just like you have above. I discovered that my unit had been owned by someone else and returned before my father purchased it. (I guess they gave it back within 14 days!) They had driven something like 100 miles per hour on the Detroit freeways, and apparently went to Cobo Hall to see a show or sporting event. I think it may have even had their home address still set to the "home" location! I eventually reset everything, but was a little annoyed that they sold my father a used unit, it was broken, and they wouldn't take it back, after they had clearly done so in the past. But it's working fine now, so no loss.
One word of warning - if you ever decide to update your maps, at least on the Street Pilot units, it will erase all of your saved locations, including your home address. And if you update your maps a week or two before Garmin releases new maps, they won't say on their web page that new maps are coming out, and they don't appear to have a 30 day free upgrade policy as some other companies do. But they'll email you a joyous note telling you that new maps are out and whatever you bought last week is now out of date, so make sure you upgrade soon! Jerks.

Maybe several GPS satellites fell out of the sky during your trip. Did you see anything up there that looked like a comet?

Actually, my experience with Garmin was quite the opposite. I bought one of their units, and it was obvious that it had been sitting in the warehouse for a while, because the maps were out of date. When I went to register my unit, they gave me an upgrade to the 2008 maps, free. I was pretty happy.
Whatever you do, though, don't buy ANYTHING from Magellan. I could fill an entire thread with the sheer number of WTFs I've experienced just dealing with that company...
