Cannot paste image into chat
-
See title. Copy image. I can paste it here. I can't paste it into chat.
-
Confirmed.
But is it meant to work?

Why not? I can paste an imgur link and it dumbboxes.

Ironically enough I actually tried this just earlier today despite knowing that it's never worked on Firefox. Apparently now it does work on Firefox.
-

Nope. I can't paste in it either, and never have been able to. Pretty sure that's by design.
@julianlam to confirm?
-
By design? No, the design is pasting an image should upload it into the composer... unless you're on IE8 or something...

Even in chat?
Cause it's never worked in a chat :)
-
Chat doesn't use composer, I would not expect composer-specific features to work where it is not used...
-
That's correct. The chat input isn't really a "composer-y" input, although the input is parsed as markdown (or whatever other parsing plugin you end up using), in addition to emojis, etc.

In other words:

You obviously do not hang around here enough to know the locals.
Let me introduce you to @Lorne-Kates. He runs FF22 on XP on a modern machine, because raisins.

Would you like a composer input to write chat messages too? Perhaps that can be arranged.
-
-
@RaceProUK Perhaps we can rip out the chat backend altogether, and instead, when you start a new chat, it just creates a hidden topic somewhere.
Code reuse!

I'd have expected it to be set up that way all along, really.
-
-
@julianlam That's really all I'd want out of a private message system: a real fucking thread, but private.
-
@julianlam also, search within chat(s) (as in, one of your conversations or all of them). If chats are actually threads under the hood, the regular search tool wouldn't even need much modification to do that.
Also, the ability to scroll back all the way to the very beginning of a conversation if you want to.
-
@Yamikuronue Wasn't that what we had in Discourse, and it was roundly ridiculed?
-
@RaceProUK Just what I was thinking
Just make what we have now a bit more composer-like IMO.
-
@RaceProUK I quite liked it. It was only as bad as all Discourse threads, and not also a separate system bolted-on after the fact with its own screw-ups.
-
@Yamikuronue I agree, it was very useful for purposes the current chat system just cannot do. However, is it necessarily the best solution?
-
@RaceProUK Best I've seen. The beauty of it is that anything threads get, the PM system gets as well, with no extra effort. The downside is potential security leaks.

If your bar is just to be as good as regular search, "Broken as fuck" is not a high rung to achieve.
-
@Polygeekery And yet, somehow, chats miss it....
-
@HardwareGeek The search tool would need modification to be able to function as a search tool.
-
So chats would become normal threads, but instead of topic id it would be a chat ID, and a property of user IDs allowed to view it?
Thumbs up, ship it. So long as you entirely hide the fact it's an almost normal topic, right?
Right?!?!
-
@Tsaukpaetra they're almost entirely like threads, with a handful of minor exceptions. It makes sense to have them be special threads.
It might make more sense to just give users a list of chat tid's they're allowed to view (or maybe something like 3 lists -- "active", "archived", and "deleted"). Then the "chats" popdown just displays that list. The chat search would only look in that list. And the rest of the site would just hide those threads entirely.
-
May I introduce you to Skype?
It has text-based chat, both one-on-one and in groups. It can make links into fancy images with text on them. And you can paste pictures into its textbox. And it even has some mild markdown features.
But it's not a forum.
Oh and you can search, too.
-
@aliceif it wouldn't much help me contact someone here, now, would it? I'm not registered on Skype with my WTDWTF name. Even if I was, there's no guarantee anyone else would be registered with theirs.

If you were it would preclude anyone else from being registered with that name

@PJH
Is this where @julianlam runs on stage, and rips his shirt off to reveal a T-shirt with the Discologo, and boldly announces "we've really just been a reskinned Discourse development test bed all along!!"?:Halloween.gif:

I'm unique across the Internet (so far).
Nobody has been dumb enough to try registering with my username (to my knowledge) elsewhere.
-
@anotherusername I'm just making a case for enabling image pasting even if we keep chats some weird thing that isn't topic-based.
-
@aliceif Ah. I misunderstood you. Sorry.
I thought you were saying "We don't need chat here. We already have Skype."

I'm unique, just like everyone else
Yes, ever since I merged all my personalities, into one(ish), all the duplicates are handling quite nicely as they no longer have the same identity magic numbers.
