Big only goes up to 5 instead of 6?
-
I might have fucked up a post, so I'm making this post to test.
I seem to recall
<big>
could go up to 6 levels deep?Big 1
Big 2
Big 3
Big 4
Big 5
Big 6Pressing post now.

@Lorne-Kates Big 6 is as big as Big 5. It should be embigger, shouldn't it?
-
don't you also have to do some other tag shenanigans like h1 and stuff?
-

Nope:
Note that
<small>
is also limited to five levels of smallnessness.
-
It should be able to go up to 11.
-
@Polygeekery why not just make 10 bigger?
-
@Jaloopa but then it wouldn't go up to 11.
-
@Polygeekery said in Big only goes up to 5 instead of 6?:
It should be able to go up to 11.
Or over 9000.
-
Don't we have CSS that limits
<big>
and<small>
because we abused them?
-
@loopback0 I think that idiot hedgehog posted the snippet above
-
@RaceProUK Sure, but I wasn't sure if that was something we added or a NodeBB "feature", hence the question.
-
@loopback0 Well, htmlcleaner is @ben_lubar's. I'm sure on vanilla nodebb you can just
<font size=9001>BIG</font>
-
@PleegWat It's not htmlcleaner. Just good old fashioned custom
CSSLess/* Stop big+big...+big abuse http://what.thedailywtf.com/t/abusing-big-tags/5566 */ big big big big big big { font-size: 1em; } /* And small-small */ small small small small small small { font-size: 1em; }

@anotherusername 6 and 7 are the same size; Thumbs down, unsubscribe
-
@hungrier in FF they're 56px and 60px respectively. In Chrome they're 34.8365px and 35.2512px.
-
@anotherusername Chrome on Windows, the difference wasn't visible. On Mac, 7 is a bit bolder.

Chrome on Windows, the difference wasn't visible
It's more noticeable on Firefox. Firefox's default size adjustment for
big
is quite a bit bigger than Chrome's is.7 is a bit bolder
That too. Its computed
font-weight
is 500 (normal
is 400,bold
is 600).
-
@hungrier said in Big only goes up to 5 instead of 6?:

Is to me:
7 is clearly smaller than both 6 and 8
-
@Yamikuronue ...your theme must be messing with font sizes or something...
-
@anotherusername Spacing too, mayhap. The complete set:
-
@Yamikuronue naw, the spacing's off on every browser I've tried it in.

"Hey guys let's use em because then fonts will always be the same everywhere!"

This is why we can't have nice things.
-
@Lorne-Kates actually, it's a side effect of the tags not being strictly defined in terms of how the default styles should be set; also,
big
isn't included in HTML5, butsmall
is. The MDN page says thatsmall
is typically implemented asfont-size: smaller
, which should reduce the font size by approximately the same ratio that's used between the absolute font sizes.And, as noted above,
big
is totally different in Firefox vs. Chrome.
-
@El_Heffe that is definitely the fault of the stylesheet, specifically the
line-height
specified in it... also, for some reason I was having to put blank lines between them or it wouldn't turn them into paragraphs, and for some reason every other one resulted in an empty<p>
block that added extra space.I suppose I could go back and replace all the line breaks with
<br>
or<p>
tags... then it'd be consistently spaced, anyway. Even if it'd probably be spaced too closely.
-
edit: it doesn't like header tags inside
<p>
tags, for some reason... that's why the spacing's inconsistent. They're forcing it to break out of the<p>
.

@dkf the justification that I saw was that there are already various different header tags (
h1
,h2
, etc.) to denote larger print, while fine print doesn't have a corresponding tag. (Although I personally think thataside
andfooter
come close.)

Yeah... 10pt is bigger than 10px.
-
@anotherusername Well that makes sense. Nice of the browser to list what unit they're using in the options though.
Here's Chrome at 13, if you were curious.

I did this yesterday but forgot to post it.
Using Opera on Windows, this is what I see:
Compare the word "Big"
Zoom in a bit
Bring the letters a bit closer vertically to make it easier to see
It's half a pixel wider.

Unfortunately, I couldn't tell myself on my screen. :D
'Course, that may be more due to being mobile than being incapable of seeing them...
