    FTFY.

Apparently they don't increment version numbers as fast as hipster web browsers?
Maybe they're celebrating a bunch of pictures and events in a sort of anthology for the latest major release?
Oh! I know! It's all about exciting music and numbers!

The thing is I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THIS IS ABOUT.

    but it's apparently important.

Oh. Maybe include that in the title next time? Having that as a footnote after two tall images is... unintuitive, at best.

It seems they are planning to release a new version of DOTA2, but for added marketing benefit, they decide to skip from "6.88" to "7.00" and make a big public commotion about it.
    [DOTA versions]

  • @Adynathos Nah, 7.00 is a huge mechanics change. Large enough for a major version increase. New buildings, very changed map, talents custom to each hero, several hero reworks.

Dota has been at balance patch major level 6 for over ten years.

wait..... so DOTA2 is version 7? wouldn't that make it DOTA7?

Looks like they're mainly copypasting a lot of gameplay and visual elements from League of Legends in an attempt to attract converts slash lower the game's vaunted skill floor. (And some genuine changes, improvements, and experiments, mind you.)

Oh, and outsourcing development of the bot AI to volunteers like with practically everything else Valve releases.

  • @accalia said in THE 700 CLUB:

Balance patch level. If the DOTA WC3 map was being updated, this would be version 7 of the map.

DOTA 2 refers to Valve's recreation of the WC3 map. Up until a couple of patches ago, the DOTA WC3 Map and DOTA 2 both were updated around the same time with the same balance changes.

Pretty sure these changes increase the skill floor actually. More options to select, more things to click. Nothing seems to have gotten easier, other than having more vision with the minimized HUD.

Yeah, that's what Google and Mozilla said at first as well. Enjoy your DOTA2 54.7.58989.2rev3-beta in a month or so.

Seems like they are unsurprisingly removing the limitations of Warcraft 3.
They could also clean the mechanics - the inconsistent interaction of various mechanics is due to the fact WC3 engine was never intended to support so many complicated spells and items.

If there is a lesson to be learned from DOTA's history as a mod, it is that giving people API access to do mods / bots is a great benefit to the game and its players.

I made mods on WC3 and DOTA2 and in many cases playing or developing mods becomes more enjoyable than the main game.

(Admittedly, DOTA2 breaks its mod API on every release :P )

I don't really have enough Dota expertise to properly judge the stat changes, but replacing stat upgrades with discrete perks, adding regen buildings around the map and giving you three "free" item slots (6 seconds isn't that much when you're between combat areas) that not only help you complete recipes but halves active cooldowns certainly smell like making the game easier to me.

  • Garbage Person

Wait. DOTA2 is a jumped up warcrap 3 mod?

Jesus Christ I just lost even more respect for the current crop of gamers.

  • @bugmenot said in THE 700 CLUB:

For 97% of the heroes this just means instead of level 15 and levels 17+ being push butan on stats you make choices at 10/15/20/25 that seem to have a large affect on the game.
    Heroes where this matters:
Anti-Mage: Can't go the BurNIng build (1-1-1, two stats at levels 4 and 5)
Juggernaut: Can't optionally get a point of stats early to help with their mana pool
Lion: I tend to not max out Mana Drain beyond level 2, sometimes 3, which means I don't get a couple points of stats mid/late game.

@bugmenot said in THE 700 CLUB:

There are only two of them that aren't in the base, 5 minute cooldown, and they're destroyable. It's a buff to base defense.

Wow they're actually worth like 75% of a tower. Those things are worth killing.

@bugmenot said in THE 700 CLUB:

    halves active cooldowns

You read incorrectly. Cooldowns take twice as long when they're in the "backpack"

Items cooldown at only half the rate when they are anywhere except your main inventory.

Didn't notice, but this seems to also apply to your in base stash.

  • @Weng Yes?

If by Jumped Up you mean re-implemented. Prior to 6.84 ish the changes were always ported back to the WC3 Map.

It's a pretty great game. Hell, League of Legends was based on it and makes like $500M a month.

I think that confirms his point more than anything else.

  • Garbage Person

@JazzyJosh I assume "map" is some sort of modern gamer jargon that has no relationship to the word "map" as it pertained to the RTS players of old. Because we had more maps than we knew what to do with. Different maps require different strategy and tactics to succeed. What you're saying implies the genre has been reduced to rote memorization of a handful of strategies and super fast clicking.

  • @Weng No. Direct correlation to RTS Maps. Defense of the Ancients was a map created int the WC3 map editor. Yes, Dota 2 is based off of a single WC3 map. Yes, you're right that it's not like Brood War where you have a ton of different maps to play the same three races with their three different playstyles on.

@Weng said in THE 700 CLUB:

Well, Dota definitely has lower APM than StarCraft because you're generally controlling less than ~5 units, and for most heroes a single unit. The variety isn't as much in different maps that have different tactics, but the 113 different characters that all have different sets of abilities, the 149 different items those characters can use, and coordinating 5 players to draft a team that can contest their opponents.

I disagree that there's rote memorization in games, you definitely have to react to what items your opponents are purchasing as the game plays out. (Oh their Luna picked up a Butterfly, I should consider buying an MKB)

  • @JazzyJosh said in THE 700 CLUB:

I think antimage has a talent that gives him evasion. Can you see the talent choices of enemy players?

  • @ben_lubar No idea. I've not played a game in the new patch yet. My random guess would be no but you'd see the effects. Let's check Dendi's stream.
