Something worth celebrating

  •  With the holidays coming I just had an interesting thought (yes it's know to happen). We spend our lives celebrating all kinds of stuff and if you sit down and think about it, it's a wonder some of it qualifies for a celebration. Now I'm not going to point to any particular holiday or custom, but I'm sure that we all have at least one holiday (minor or major) in our culture that needs to be taken out and shot. Seeing as it was acceptable for someone in the past to promote trivialities as something to be celebrated, I don't see why we can't come up with something better ourselves. Therefore I propose we institute a new holiday.

I propose we celebrate Evolution Day. That's right, take a moment to consider the trillions of trillions of creatures that lived and died just so we could have cool stuff like self-repairing tissue, automatic reflexes and everything else on this swiss army knife of a body. I'd like to thank all my ancestors, human or not who lived and died in the dirt so I have can have a massively parrallel processor for a brain. And I certainly would like to thank all the failed genetic experiments who managed to remove themselves from the gene pool so I don't have to live in the mud. Thanks everyone.

Now we just have to find a date and come up with a tradition for this holiday.

  •  Hmm.. seems I spoke too soon, as we already have an Evolution Day. Sorry Darwin. Still, we need a tradition for it.

Good idea.  In honour of our ancestors I suggest shedding all material possessions and wriggling around in the mud.

I suggest we further "purify" our genetic code.  Oh, and every day should be Evolution Day.

It's what Darwin would have wanted.

I can't think of any off-hand that I'm not very fond of.  I'm not familiar with every minute holiday, though.

Technically no species did those things so you could have anything.  They just happened and the nature of limited resources meant that more adaptable genetic strains thrived.  If you really want to get down to brass tacks, you should be thankful that resource scarcity exists.

Ah, quit your nitpicking and enjoy the holiday.

We should give each other empty boxes to celebrate the scarcity of resources.  We should also have competitions to determine the strongest, most intelligent of our species.  The winner would publicly inseminate the one thousand most attractive females of the species to celebrate his superior genes.  Of course, we'd have to limit a winner to a single victory.  It wouldn't be all that exciting for everyone to see me win every year, after all.

Negro Christmas?  I got nothin' against keepin' the Real Christmas a white Christmas, if you catch my drift.  Like the law says: separate but equal.

LOL and I had to Google "MLK" - I thought it might have been related to MILF or something :)

Now that is something worth celebrating.
