MS SQL Server and Visual Studio intallers
-
I've had my work computer since 2013. By now it has 3 versions of both SSMS and VS.
We were given a prerequisites for our MS Dynamics training. I probably spent over a day on it last week (short week as governmental employees get both election day and Veteran's day as a holiday).
I didn't finish Thursday. I installed everything and the plugins for VS 2015 seem to be there but the additional Tools were not.
I logged in Sunday night, thinking maybe it was installed to the wrong version of VS. When to try and uninstall the older version.
Nope, and now I borked my SQL Server Studio install. And stayed up way too late (hence my repeatedly nodding during class--though that was how I spend much of HS and college).
Go the the Control Panel -> Programs and Features.
Spend most of Monday (during training) trying uninstall older versions of SSMS and VS.
Many failed or proved warnings.
I kept working on it last night from home and again stayed up later than I should have.
Still can't uninstall it all.
Googling this morning I found this:
It is slow as hell and has a horrible UI but it has been uninstalling things but not everything and order matters.
Still fucking working on it.

I, too, was affected by Visual Studio software that refused to uninstall unless the dependencies were first installed.
I reformatted.
-
@LB_ Damn...I hope I don't have to do that.

yeah..... that never works.
whenever we upgrade versions of SQL server or Visual Studio i wipe my work machine and start fresh. it literally is faster.
for home VS and SQLserver are only allowed on VMs i can delete whenever i want.
-
@accalia Damn.
Why is this not a solved problem

because,.....
well either because "fuck you" or because Mocrosoft doesn't believe anyone could possibly desire to uninstall one of their products.

Sure, it's that kind of verbiage that usually tips me off that it's a piece of malware, but since it's directly from Microsoft...

Well, it is malware. It uninstalls things. Even worse, it uninstalls Microsoft products! How would Microsoft not consider it malware?

I too had problems with uninstalling Visual Studio.
But I was even more outraged when installing it. 8-12 hours.

Just nuke your OS and start from scratch. It's definitely faster (provided you have a decent SSD - otherwise your life sucks anyway), and you get rid of all the other crap you collected over the years as well.
It's what I do whenever we decide to switch to a new VS version. Or MS brings out a new Windows version (or "anniversary update", now).

I have an SSD at home not at work.
That is how I feel about new OSes...if I want it...it comes with a new computer then.
-
Basically you are all saying that I am screwed.
-
@Karla said in MS SQL Server and Visual Studio intallers:

Well, your life sucks.
Even our trainees all have SSDs now, because even they are too expensive to waste their time waiting for Visual Studio to think about starting to do things on a HDD.That is how I feel about new OSes...if I want it...it comes with a new computer then.
We are a Microsoft shop. We HAVE TO use the newest and latest products, or start buying licenses for the old ones.

unfortunately, yes.....

Yeah. You don't uninstall VS. You just add new versions. Then get a new computer (by either buying or nuke/paving).
That said, I have uninstalled all of VS (all versions). When something complains "there may be dependencies" I skip that and come back. Once it all (seems) gone and I've rebooted a couple times. Then I bring back the version I want. Usually (sometimes) works.

That's why I download the ISO and use that.

The Real is the company that designed/built the OS and the install/uninstall system couldn't code an installer/uninstaller if their life depended on it.
-
I uninstalled because I thought the Data Tools and CRM didn't work right because it might have installed on the older version.
I actually tried reinstalling. I have succeeded in installing VS 2015 (only took about 3 hours) and SSMS 2014 (probably about an hour).
Now, I am attempting to install Data Tools but after extensive googling I found I initially tried installing the wrong one for my versions.
The file has the same name from MS.
Here's hoping I have eliminated all of the gremlins.
-
@marczellm Thankfully the next version finally has a modular installer.
Better late than never.
-
@Karla Yeah, that kicks the nuts quite often, and it no longer happens with just DLLs anymore!

Just discovered the install-an-extension process royally sucks in 2017. Before you could install all those vsix files and then restart VS. Now they don't install until you actually close VS. And wait - because the install will fail since some things are still running. Taps toe... Retry. Taps toe. Retry. Finally.
-
No success with Data Tools. I keep getting an Unauthorized Operation.
My google-fu has failed.
Help desk not too much help. I gave him more details than he gave me.
-
@Karla Question 1(Non-serious): Why didn't you have a VM for this Training-ering stuffs? Wise-man once say, never mix Visual Studios; always big cluster fuck, much sadness.
Question 2: (Seriously) Why did you attempt an uninstall when things looked broken?
Asking as an installation developer who wants to understand what seems like impulse behavior( It no seem work? UNINSTALL ALL THE THINGS!)
-

Because supporting this will eventually be my job, so we were given directions to install on our machines.
Question 2: (Seriously) Why did you attempt an uninstall when things looked broken?
Asking as an installation developer who wants to understand what seems like impulse behavior( It no seem work? UNINSTALL ALL THE THINGS!)At the time, I had some success with installing the data tools but not all of them.
I suspected that the tools may have been installed on the older version of VS as the installers did not give options or ask for paths to anything.
I like to figure things out on my own. I'm sure there are times that makes our helpdesk happy and others that make them sad. There have been times I asked for help...they had nothing...I then figured it out and gave them the information (same thing happens with our DBA). My google-fu is usually strong.
I also clearly underestimated the depth of the problem.

I believe both those tools are available for Linux now.
There's no real need to endure the utterly barking mad Windows installation process.

LOL yeah.
My coworker just had them reimage her machine.
That has its own challenges as we are still supporting ColdFusion 10 apps and I don't think you can get the download from Adobe anymore as they are 2 versions ahead.

OH SO IT DOES NOT SUPPORT ARCH OR GENTOO OR PUPPY LINUX OR SABAYON OR SLACKWARE OR SOURCE MAGE OR SLAX OR TIZEN OR OPENMOKO OR DAMN SMALL LINUX OR GOBOLINUX OR RED STAR OS OR EVEN ANDROID?
WHAT A PIECE OF SHIT

Slackware is best.

It's not because it doesn't support all those that it's a piece of shit, but because it's made by Micro-Soft :p
B.t.w., there is a tar.gz for Visual Studio Code

@Karla If you don't mind killing all the SQL Server Management Studios, first uninstall all the random small libs there will be loads called "SQL Office information service tooling" etc, and then go for the heart of the beast for each version of Management Studio. Half of them will say "this program is no longer there" and will be removed from program manager. Google everything to make sure it isn't part of VS instead of SQL Management Studio.
Run something like CCleaner to get rid of crap reg files entries afterwards if this approach works.
If it is still borked, Sorry it is reinstall time. I did a Win 10 reinstall recently because I just had to crap in Programs files that I didn't know whether it was VS / SQL or otherwise and random shit wasn't working right (I couldn't import data tier apps from Azure for unknown reasons why it worked fine on my laptop).

I did what I could through control panel and did more through the tool I mention in the OP.

I got rid of all of both. And googled somethings that were not obviously both.

I probably should have done this...maybe I still can

We won't be allowed to go to Win 10 for awhile.
EDIT: Premature submission
-
@Karla It doesn't have to be 10, it doesn't really matter what version. But if it is truly buggered it best just to start again.

(in Lorne-Kates voice) Not idiot !

I did what I could through control panel and did more through the tool I mention in the OP.
There tends to be a load of helper programs that SQL Server and SQMS installs that it leaves around. They are listed in "Programs and Features" tool. See if there are any of those hanging around, if not then I dunno. Sorry.
-

Be careful because it one of those programs that might install one of those search tools.

Use ninite, it always install without all the crap.
Plus it's really convenient
-
@TimeBandit I forgot about that tool. Good tip!!

Yes, I already removed everything I could through there and then some.
-
@Karla I don't think I can try to help anymore. Sorry.
-
@lucas1 Yeah, it was determined that I was screwed up thread.

@flabdablet said in MS SQL Server and Visual Studio intallers:
That's a big difference. Visual Studio Code can only do web development. No C# and no native.

I'm not sure that's true.
Or at least you can't say that based on Visual Studio's installer/uninstaller as it doesn't (directly?) use the Windows install system...
-
@powerlord said in MS SQL Server and Visual Studio intallers:

Nothing does "directly" use that system. It's just a massive house of enterprisey indirection cards. That's why it sucks.
-
@Bulb It can do C# and it can do native if you have the right stuff installed.
I have been doing .NET Core since the start of this year on it. I prefer VS and proper .NET because there are still a lot of problems with .NET core.
There are C++ / C plugins for it.
