"It's blacker than my soul, and priced right."
"Keep in car for when you have to hide the bodies."
These are some Amazon reviews that serial killer Todd Kohlhepp left on Amazon. Also, a chainsaw:
These are reviews left by a man who allegedly killed 5 people and police found a woman chained up in a metal shipping container on his property.

nah, 'murica's getting a lot more progressive about that lately
sure we have impending legal battles about wrongful terminations due to turning up to work in an "altered state of mind" and all that. and there's the issue of it still technically being a federal offense even if it's legal at the state level, but we'll have that solved in twenty years, eighty at the out side.
that's actually remarkably quick for us solving our issues. i mean, look at us, we still havent got over the revolutionary war and the issues that left us with.

Your follow up post would have been much more effective with just the .gifs

Your follow up post would have been much more effective with just the .gifsmeh. NodeBB doesn't know how to handle Chrome pasting GIFs and i didn't feel like saving that one to my memes folder.
i do need to find one for that folder, but it's gotta be..... more ããããŪčģ for my tastes.

Yes, and we look at you as a fine example. We use your experience with it to have numbers. You know how they like to have nice graphs in PowerPoint to convince them.
But... we are doing it on the federal level, so the whole country will be freed at the same time.
Thank you, friendly neighbor from the south !

To be fair, I've had my share of fixing coding problems due to a co-worker being in an "altered state of mind".

The response to turning up to work stoned should be exactly the same as for turning up drunk
-
@Jaloopa How about turning up on prescription opiates you need to be able to function?

no arguments from me.
but i guarantee someone's going to get fired for it and then claim wrongful termination and/or discrimination because they can't prove that they were stoned on the job.
the lawyers will love those lawsuits, because regardless who wins they get paid.

@xaade Actually, IME, we could use more of that. I have often said that it is no coincidence that software code quality began declining around the same time that drug screening as a requirement for coding jobs caught on.

I thought it was around the time that businesses started demanded a degree.
-
@xaade Naah, it started long before that. Degrees didn't really start showing up as a requirement until the early 2000s, and even three years ago I was able to get by without one (though it didn't exactly end well for me for other reasons). Coding quality really started to decline back in the 1980s, and has just kept falling ever since.
Mind you, it was never very high to begin with, but it was definitely higher when the developers were, too.
Also, it only works to a certain degree, so too much a of a fun thing makes it worse, not better:
Filed Under: According to Explain XKCD, the Ballmer Peak may be real! Sort of.
Actual research reported on December 2014 showed that the situation described in this paper is not far from reality. The peak in reality is 0.075 and in the comic it is 0.13.

That's a tricky one. If the only things that help with a chronic condition also degrade your ability to do your job then you're in a catch-22 anyway.

TIL code quality is still feeling the aftershocks of the impact of Parachute Pants.

Not sure stupid qualifies as ASoM...
-
@Jaloopa Yeah. I know people with my condition that have it worse than I do often use medical marijuana and/or opiates to ease the pain. I would not want to be involved with the lawsuit that dealt with that ADA case.
-
@Yamikuronue If I was making the decision, I'd say being on a prescription would give a lot more leeway, but if you're on something like medical marijuana and the side effects are affecting your work you need to discuss with your doctor about getting something better suited to working. There are opiates that don't fog your brain too much, and maybe some people can cope with them through the workday before using stronger stuff in the evening.
I say this as someone who used to smoke cannabis quite a lot recreationally, so I'm familiar with the side effects. With a small amount in my system I think I could still knock out decent code but past a certain point you just lose the ability to keep all the threads in your head. I also wouldn't want to regularly drive to work under the influence
-
@Jaloopa For sure. The last time I had to take Vicodin, I took time off because I could not drive. Thankfully that was for my wisdom teeth coming out, so it was a short-term thing. I'm lucky enough to be able to manage my job with just some topical painkillers and a drug that helps my nerves be less sensitive, rather than a proper painkiller.

Regularly? Fuck that - NEVER! DUI is not only alcohol.
-
@Jaloopa said in I will never look at Amazon reviews the same way again.:

That's simple, just code in node.js.
-
@Maciejasjmj Then you just lose the ability to track all those continuations in your head.
But at least it isn't threads, amirite?
-
@dkf said in I will never look at Amazon reviews the same way again.:

Look, Node developers have somehow managed to wrap their heads around those. And since every Node project basically says "hey, wouldn't it be cool to write business-critical code and run the Internet on what's probably the least suitable language for that this side of INTERCAL", I can only assume there are massive amount of weed involved in development of every single Node app.

agreed.

I find it telling Node didn't really take off until someone invented Promises.
