ASUS Touchpad software is ultrashit

It has a "coasting" feature that continues scrolling if you flick. But it doesn't coast. I just keeps emitting PGUP and PGDOWN. Guess what happens if you press CTRL while scrolling? Here Is A Hint.
-
If you put two fingers on the touchpad, and swipe, it'll scroll. Seems ok. Now, have Task Manager open while you do that. Ready? Scroll. Didja just notice how the AsusTPCenter.exe shot up to 100% CPU? Well it did. And will do that every time you scroll. Because apparently you can't risk having ANY LAG. And the only way of doing that is to PEG THE FUCKING CPU TO THE MAX. And hey, if you didn't notice via Task Manager, you will notice when every time you scroll, your fan turns on and your battery drains.
-
By default, it's set to scroll down when you swipe down. Contrary to how every single touchpad has worked since Jesus invented them.
-
Did I mention the entire drive suit crashed and had to be reinstalled? I'm willing to blame Windows Id10t on that one.

I found the best thing while looking for a snarky image response to that:
Have you tried that?
-
One of the reasons for clean install. There's usually no reason to leave the OEM crap on there. If not having it breaks something, blacklist the manufacturer for their products.... ;)

This is how an ex-Apple employee is trolling you. On my DELL Precision 7510 (work laptop), the fucking touchpad has the same Natural scrolling misfeature. To disable it, you have to navigate 10 different dialogs and uncheck a checkbox in Windows! That crap is actually a hardware default, because on a dual-boot in Linux the touchpad is not detected as touchpad, but a PS-2 mouse and guess what, by default the fucking Natural scrolling is turned on. I wonder if touchpad vendor wants to sell to Apple or Apple copy-cats.
-
Fuck ASUS. Fuck them so much.
The touchpad of the ASUS laptop which I have as a secondary machine really seems to be from hell itself.
And getting it to work on Win10 took waaay too long.

Here's a nice example of how utterly fucktarded they are:
You have to double click the tray icon if you want to change touchpad settings.
Not single left-click. And no, there is not a context menu either.Seriously, fuck ASUS.
-
Hmm..
OK?!? Maybe I know why I'm not bothered.
Touchpads have never been the highlight of any laptop I've ever used.
On my work laptop, I can't disable the touchpad, even when I disable the touchpad. Clicking while typing sucks.
I don't know why they got rid of those little red knobs in the middle of the keyboard.
I think rule of cool is perpetuating touchpads.

bador quixotic idea.

This. I have yet to see ANY OEM software that doesn't suck goat balls.
Don't get me started on the 100+ MB "management" software Realtek used to provide together with their 20 KB Wifi driver that would work just fine with the Windows tools alone.
-
@Lorne-Kates : I'm not sure what happened, but there's an extra word at the beginning of your thread title, spelled like the name of a maker of computers and components.
Really: "Touchpad software is ultrashit" would have sufficed, except that it's an understatement.

ASUS does their own special shit.
Good old Synaptics touchpad software of the Windows XP and 7 era worked just fine back then FFS.
And my main laptop (made by Acer) doesn't even have any custom touchpad software.
-
@Jaloopa Right so.
Did it with the keystroke on the laptop, and with the device manager.
-
@aliceif I just wish they'd keep the gestures somewhat the same.
I keep forgetting that my work laptop doesn't do the double finger scroll thing. Which is annoying considering it doesn't have that right side scroll area either.
No, wait, it worked there, just tried it.
Must have been another laptop... shakes head

Well, on Linux the touchpad gestures (and precision scrolling) work out of the box. So if you need an entire crappy software suite to make it work on Windows, whose fault is that then?
-
@Grunnen Yes. Linux is well known for its high level of hardware support and low incidence of bad drivers
-
@xaade said in ASUS Touchpad software is ultrashit:

I had IBM Thinkpad A20M before, and that red rubber in the middle of keyboard becomes grey pretty quickly and does not look good.
That's probably the reason.
-
@Jaloopa I just said something about this particular issue. And as one should know, one cannot conclude generic statements from a single case or vice-versa (most of the times).
-
@cheong But it functioned better and more reliable than a touchpad.
Which, by the way, is so confusing, why can't they get it right. We have touchscreens that perform better. And I understand that a touchscreen shows you what you are touching under your finger. Putting concept superiority aside, I'm talking about robustness and functioning as designed. Touchpads don't even do that.
-
@xaade said in ASUS Touchpad software is ultrashit:

The one in my old Dell laptop didn't; mileage has been observed to vary. The Apple touchpads are usually damn good. They feel a bit odd when you come to them having used some of the shittier PC ones, but that's something that at least I managed to adapt to fairly quickly.
OTOH, I know some people who really prefer mice and others who love touch screens and some who like the clit approach (though not many of them).
-
I'm for mice myself.
Touch is good an all for mobile. But if you have any desk space (or table space, or floor space, even) a mouse is superior.
The little knob is more precise too. But I can understand them wearing out. They didn't for me, but that was because it was a backup for when a mouse wasn't available.

For touchpads, how the acceleration is handled seems to be critical, as that is the key to getting both accuracy and speed. No idea how it works exactly. :)

These days I really don't even think about drivers. Stuff just works when I plug it in.

Except when you have the misfortune of using Windows ?
At least, that's my experience.
File Under: People that complain about drivers in Linux have usually no experience using it in the current millennium.
-
@TimeBandit said in ASUS Touchpad software is ultrashit:

Nah. That means I'm using a customer provided Win7 machine that Windows Update stopped updating nearly 2 years ago. But it works and I only use it to connect to their VPN and they haven't complained so I won't either.

pretty much anything that you can plug into a machine that does not require opening the case "just works"TM
we're still not quite there on the stuff that requires opening the case. I'm looking at you mssrs Graphics Cards

Linux drivers work basically just like Windows', it's just that on Windows they're written by the hardware maker while on Linux they're written by the OS maker, so the results are completely different.
Also on Linux the drivers can't have GUIs because there's no standard way for a program to have a GUI.
-
@anonymous234 said in ASUS Touchpad software is ultrashit:

if you driver needs a GUI you is doing it wrong.
you can has a GUI application to set options, sure, but driver should work with defaults in absence of app.

You want an EXTERNAL graphics card?
Those things that generate enough heat they need a fucking SERIES OF TURBINES just to keep them from turning into slag?
http://i.imgur.com/9MZh1q4.png
Those things. Those things that, now they're on the outside of the case, don't have the advantage of the internal airflow to cool them. So you'll need even MORE BIGGER fans spinning EVEN FASTER just to exhaust properly? Giant spinning blades of death, right next to your cords and fingers and pets.
And goodness knows they're noto roiously quiet... goddamnititI said they're notoriously quiet... oh for the love of shit...
I SAID THEY'RE Notoriously
QUIET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is a simple fix for us Canadians: just put your PC outside and you can even remove the fans.
