Group sues to see more ads
-
OK, that's a trollish way to describe it, but some people are upset that some housing related ads are excluding them due to race, and that's what they're doing.
-
@boomzilla I'm pretty sure they still see the same amount of ads, just different ones.
What I don't understand is why they sue facebook instead of whoever actually ordered the ad campaign and unchecked the "show this to black people" checkbox. (Alright, I do, facebook has money...)
-
wats an ad?
:adblock.lol:

I'm sure that'll be the first part of FB's defense.
-
@boomzilla Facebook doing something that makes sense? Yeah, right.
-
@blek Well, their lawyers. I generally trust FB to do stuff in their financial interest.
-
According to Facebook, excluding certain people according to race = Multicultural Marketing.

Google: Don't Be Evil

My understanding is that the New York Times (I think?) was held liable in the past for not ensuring that their advertisers' ads did not violate the Fair Housing Act, and they believe Facebook to be in the same position. It sounds like an interesting case.
-
@Yamikuronue I guess I'm not surprised this happens sometimes - I just think it's really stupid. Not sure about the interesting case; as I said before I think they're looking for money, and this seems like the kind of thing a company like facebook would gladly settle out of court to make it quietly go away.
-
@masonwheeler I think Google don't give a shit anymore either. Didn't they even drop that slogan when they transformed into Alphabet?

Maybe. Though if that were true, they wouldn't have filed a class action... the plaintiffs in those almost always get either miniscule amounts of cash, or slightly larger amounts of company credit.
Facebook may settle to avoid a ruling that requires it to police housing adverts, but I can't imagine that the settlement would give the plaintiffs 10x more than they would be granted by the court.

According to WikiPedia:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don't_be_evil(Huh, onebox failed there...)
Yes, that's no longer the slogan after the toss. However it's still there in the Google Code of Conduct, supposedly.

Maybe they're suing facebook for having such a checkbox in the first place? That's what I'd consider actionable.

@Medinoc Is targeted advertising racist now? I lost track years ago.

I consider it a lot of things-ist, but I doubt the law agrees with me.

Only when it violates the Fair Housing Act.

My daughter likes watching the ads more than almost anything else

watching ads is what the superbowl is for. those bits between the ads are when you nip out to the kitchen for more food, or the bathroom to recycle the beer.
