Free Delphi 10.1 Starter

Not sure if this is a DFS-style sale as I lost interest in Delphi when the price became ridiculous but the starter edition is currently free instead of €400.
It's incredibly basic compared to VS Community, but I like collecting keys.

We're planning to escape Delphi if we can, but I'm gonna download it just for fun.

Right, so, I managed to download it and run the installer, and it pretty much just disappeared after a moment and asked for a key, so I entered that, and then pressed the button, and that disappeared too.
No confirmation of anything.
But it was in my start menu, as rad studio rather than Delphi?
So I ran that, and when trying to get the .Net version, it immediately crashed. Well, okay, maybe it really does need 3.5 specifically, whatever. So I download that installer and run it, and that window disappears immediately, and nothing seems to be fixed.
QUALITY PRODUCT.

@Magus I didn't even download it yet, I only got registered for the license key. But, they did already try calling me and, when I failed to answer, emailed me to see if I had 10 minutes for a quick call regarding the "trial" I didn't actually download.

Delphi's gone severely downhill in the last few years, ever since they tossed out Nick Hodges (the product manager) for reasons that have never been fully revealed publicly but are widely believed to have to do with Nick speaking truth to power in his typically blunt way. I know Nick pretty well, and I find this completely believable.
Nick recently quit his current job to return as Delphi product manager.
The entire Delphi community (what's left of it at this point) is basically in
mode at the moment.

@masonwheeler The last version I did anything non-trivial with was Delphi 2009, which was 12 major versions ago. I installed 10.1 and started it up and it took a while before I could spot a difference.

7 was nice, but it lacks generics and closures, which makes it feel very limiting once you get used to those features.

I'm pretty sure one of our apps is in Delphi 5, which is why we really want to do something about it. But that's OOOOOOOOLD, so it will be hard.

It's even more ridiculus considering you can probably just switch to Lazarus and get an open source delphi for free. The only thing that would stop you from just opening your project in Lazarus and continuing work like nothing has changed could be that you need some sort of comercial tooling or library that does not work with Lazarus and freepascal. Usually you can just slap on the delphimode compiler switch on top of every file and you're good to go.
I was actually pleasently surprised how everything about Lazarus "justworks" after I was recently remebered how everything about C++ just wants to make me cry before I have even written a single line of code and encountered a language wtf. I just tried out Lazarus for the first time in two years or so out of couriosity and nostalgia and I could get a basic SDL2 pong running and building in under two hours.
It makes me sad to think of what could have become of Delphi/Pascal if they hadn't crashed and burned that thing by management wtf-ery.

Also, HOLY SHIT THOSE PRICES
Their entire business model at this point is clearly just milking the poor business with legacy apps they need to support. Which makes that promotion all the more baffling. Why bother?

@Quwertzuiopp I haven't really looked at Lazarus in many years, since they made it abundantly clear that getting a real, working Package system was simply not anywhere at all on the priorities list.
In addition to that, the form designer is completely b0rked and the debugger is even worse, built atop GDB of all things!
I like the basic idea behind FPC/Lazarus, but the execution is beyond screwed up.

@masonwheeler I cannot speak for how it used to be when you used it, but it definiatly improved a lot since I last used it. The form designer did not seem b0rked, but then again I did no serious work with it, and debugging seems to work fine for me. I was surprised as well that they use GDB, but I would not have noticed had I not tried to find out. My experience with the debugger was at least pleasant in the few little projects I did on the side since I tried it out a few weeks ago.

Sounds about right. Really, if you use it for a year and actually come back for a renewal...you are dumb enough to pay that.

I also like that there is a free Object Pascal book given away with every version except Starter.

Delphi C++ is what actually got me seriously interested in programming. And no, not because I have ever used it. I never have. I was in my early teens and I had been digging around in the internals of Command & Conquer Red Alert's files with XCC Mixer when I saw a comment in one of the files that said something like "Made with Delphi C++ 6." I thought that was pretty neat and decided that I would like to learn how to write programs so that I could write my own game.
My uncle heard about my desire to program, so he gave me a copy of the Borland C++ IDE (v4.5), with all the documentation for it and the source code for the libraries. (His company had moved to the newer version and was getting rid of this one.) Being an avid reader, I ate them up, reading through those manuals and references and guides several times, and I wrote a few little programs. I quickly learned just how much work goes into programming projects; and though I have kinda lost my drive to make a game, I have come to enjoy programming itself a lot. Now I work with my cousin (that uncle's son, and who I also went to college with) and do mostly Java programming (in Eclipse) with some data manipulation in SQL (in SSMS).

Or maybe they're changing their prices based on geolocation and time of the day, like some online retailers. Which I'm pretty sure will piss off businesses - if you want different business customers to pay different prices, you really shouldn't be advertising them publicly.

Not just businesses:
Even if you assume that the Dutch prices include VAT (which is likely, even if I wouldn’t be surprised if Adobe doesn’t pay tax in the EU), the first one costs €49.99, which is US$56.9963 at the time of writing, or about 7.5% more. If you assume that everything goes straight into Adobe’s pockets, it’s 30% more expensive. For the same service being delivered from the same data centres?

@blakeyrat they've had two C++ IDEs - the older one was named Borland C++, the newer one was C++ Builder. I don't know exact history, but from quick googling, I've gathered that this wasn't just simple renaming but a brand new product (first C++ Builder was released alongside Borland C++, and for a moment they were being sold together while keeping it clear it's 2-in-1 bundle, before abandoning Borland C++ altogether, but not before releasing it as standalone compiler without IDE).

I think I still have a disc of that somewhere (actually, unsure if it was a disc or disk(s)). And a huge-ass manual. IIRC, it had a UI editor that was almost up to par with VB6's at the time (a pretty darn nice WYSIWYG designer). And the pro was you could write code in C++, not VB!
But I may be thinking of a different piece of software altogether.

That might very well be an understatement. While C++Builder was... well, there was still C++ underneath it, what Delphi did was beat VB6 and VS6 with Microsoft's own shitty stick. Probably still does if WPF designers are any indication. I haven't yet toyed much with this new thing (or in fact not a lot since about 15 years ago when a pimply teenager with my name was still somewhat convinced programming might be a good trade to pursue). But at a glance it seems they haven't managed to completely fsck it up. It's recognizable, at any rate, which is commendable already.
Anyway, VCL provided all sorts of basic stuff basically doing half of the work, making its licensing costs reasonable. More so, there was a whole scene of both free and paid components of almost all kinds. Many an application could be almost ready to ship in record-breaking times. And many, of course, were, with all the consequences you don't have to imagine. That's probably a good part of how Ermahgerdero is still in business - that debt is still being paid. Too bad it doesn't take much to find that the language itself has pretty much stagnated since then. Quite probably because around that point its chief architect Anders Hejlsberg went on and designed C# (under not so mysterious circumstances of Microsoft giving him a truckload of money).

I have no IDEA. It may have been a decision made with no IntelliJ-ence. Or maybe it was. I just used the IDE recommended to me when I started the job. Perhaps the team figured that the one the rest of the team used Eclipse-d any other choice.

I was advised by a recruiter to take Delphi off my resume in 2010 when looking for my next gig, as it would be perceived that my skillset was out-of-date, notwithstanding that the company I worked for at the time had a legacy winapp AND more "modern" ASP.NET solutions, and that I worked on both.

Ah, yes, VCL rings a bell so yes, it was C++Builder that I used. Fun fact I found while looking VCL (Visual Component Library) up is that much of the .NET design is allegedly based on VCL.

Maybe? I distinctly remember seeing "Delphi" and I know for certain that it also said "C++" because that's the language I decided to learn based on that comment. Perhaps it said something else like "Written in C++ using Delphi."
Fake edit: After a bit of googling, it may have mentioned "Delphi/C++" which seems right.

That sounds about right for Borland C++. There was a lot of documentation! If you take three of those "Everything to Know About PHP" books and divide them up into about a dozen books, then that's about what I had. They covered just about everything: coding in C++, an STL library reference, writing programs for DOS, writing programs for Windows, a Windows API reference, and even a tutorial to create a fairly simple Paint clone with "infinite" undo/redo functionality.
I really liked the WYSIWYG editor, but it was obviously designed for programs that would run on Win9x with no real support for anything newer. And the C++ support was only up to C++98 (not even C++03).I still have my disc for it (with the books included on it in digital format), but I think I gave away the paper texts and the original disc to one of my cousins (a different one than I work with now) who had expressed some interest in programming.
The other IDEs I've used a fair amount are Dev-C++ and Code::Blocks.
