Major purchases and customer service
-
There are some things you only expect to buy once, or at least only once in a great many years, and if you become a repeat customer it means something's gone very wrong.
Cars, major appliances, engagement rings, and houses immediately come to mind, for example.
I just got a call (at work!) from such a vendor, from whom I have bought one thing ever, informing me that as a major preferred customer I'm eligible for a discount on my next purchase.
How does that even make any sense?

It's marketing. I don't believe it's supposed to make sense.

@masonwheeler That happened with my last motorcycle which I bought brand-new. I paid it off in about two months, then started getting sales calls along the lines of "We're so glad you've finally paid off your vehicle! Now you should come see us about putting your savings to work and trading towards a new vehicle!"

Well...unless you are @Lorne-Kates.

Vendor of?
I mean, unless it was an industrial duty spiky purple dildo. Then don't tell us.
In fact, if you don't tell us, we will now assume it is an industrial duty spiky purple dildo...

You're the one person who bought their crap. They're happy.

Just remember - if you don't buy another one, it's your fault their kids will starve!

Engagement rings, OK, but the other ones make sense. I mean...there are multiple major appliances, people often own multiple cars (especially those in families with multiple drivers) and people often have reasons to move.
But then...if you've bought an engagement ring, what about wedding rings? Anniversary jewelry? Birthday? Valentines? Christmas?
No, I don't understand your confusion here.

How often do people move and buy through the same realtor though?

My neighbor could have - they just moved one town over...

The realtor could refer them to someone in the area where they are moving to or might get the sell listing.

Or people may be looking for a larger/smaller house in the same locale.

I've known some people who do that. I have no idea how they afford that (or think that they can).
-

4 years is normal here because then you are required to show up for yearly check-ups.
Apparently I miscalculated by a month. New one probably arrives in January but I have to show up with the old one before half December

the one i bought my prius from seems to think every six months is a good rate to trade your car in for a new one.
Last call i got from them i told them: "get me a zero percent interest loan for five years on a car win [specs] and i'll do it. I know you can get the car, and your television ads tell me you can get me that loan, until then, i'm quite happy with Sascha and i couldn't think of trading her in for anything less."
for some strange reason i havent gotten another call from that dealership.

Our realtor was my brother-in-law. He did a really good job. We will use him again for our next house...unless we move out of state...or I end up in the market for another engagement ring also.

Yes, when browsing around for a new version you go to either a car dealer or a bar.

They know not to take you seriously because you're the kind of person who names your car.

@boomzilla
Well, there is the whole concept of leasing. Or rolling in the amount you were underwater on your last car to the loan for the next one and hoping the bank won't screw you too badly on theinterest ratemonthly payment. Why does that evil money grubbing bank need a bigger monthly payment anyway? You deserve a new car, that bank shouldn't get to take your money, we need the government to mandate that banks give us the car we are entitled to, for a reasonable monthly payment. I'm voting for BernieCars!</snark>

I used to. But it gets irritating the more things you have to name. I now save names for things with minds of their own, such as laptops and mobile phones.

They're just trying to get the American 1950s back.

@Gurth I still say Ford missed a bet back in 2000 when they didn't release a special edition Millennium Falcon. (I checked at the time; they still had rights to the model name.)

I wasn't going to ask for sure. Besides, I've never been in a long-distance relationship (let alone a relationship-- wait, no, technically I was in one a decade and a half ago, but I honestly don't consider that "true")...

New-car buyers, anyway.
I've never bought a car that wasn't new. (I got hand-me-down cars when I was high-school – college age, but I didn't buy them.) I've never kept any of them for less than, I think, 12 years, except the one my wife got in the divorce, which she totalled at about 7 or 8.
