Amazon Music

So my kid bought the trial of amazon music last night on my wife's phone. I thought "Maybe I have some settings wrong on my account."
Cancelled the trial. Disabled 1-click purchasing. I have parental controls on already.
amazon said:
Note: 1-Click ordering is always enabled for digital video, Kindle books, MP3s, and other digital purchases.
WTF
how do I set parental controls
I don't want my kids buying stuffAmazon:
I am really sorry but you can set up parental control only on kindle device not on your phone. so I would suggest you to please sign out from your account when you use your Amazon account from your phone, so that your son will not able to order anything from your account.
Let me talk to a manager
Amazon manager:
Okay, you can install an Applock app on your phone, and lock the amazon music app so that it always ask for a password when someone will try to open it.
really
i have to get a third party app just to work around your app's shortcomings?Amazon manager:
It's not the app's shortcoming, the parental control feature what you're looking for is a device specific feature that can be used to block apps or set a password, it's not a feature that comes with an app.
the act of buying something through the app that is used to play music should be authenticated
and authorized
so yes, it's the app's shortcoming
like you guys finally improved the parental controls on fire tv
so my kid can now watch free stuff but not buy
why can't you do it on the music side as well
is that really too much to ask?Amazon Manager:
At this time, there is no such option to block your child from purchasing something on the amazon music app. But this option is available on Fire tablets on which you can setup parental control password and every time someone tries to purchase something it will ask for a password.
i guess you guys need to send me a free fire tablet
if that's the only workaround
I will also take a free amazon echoAmazon Manager:
I'm sorry but that cannot be done.
I would request you to wait for an upgrade in the amazon music app, but I cannot assure when this will be done.well why don't you give me the JIRA ticket # for this issue
and subscribe me so I get updatesAmazon Manager:
A ticket cannot be filed for this as this is not an issue. It is a feature request that will be decided by the developers.
if you let developers decide what features to build, I can see why you have a problem
-
Perhaps it's time to
(probably not, but I felt like making that picture)

or jump ship to google play Music (which is fxxing awesome BTW, youshould try it out. Bonus: if you pay for All Access (10$/month for individual, 15$/month for family of up to 6, offer only in valid countries, some restrictions apply, etc. etc.) it ALSO disables ads in youtube.
WIN!
-
I kind of agree with the manager - surely you don't expect every app and website to roll their own parental control functionality just because it's not part of the operating system? Using a third party app of your choice sounds pretty reasonable to me.

Sure, but. Remember that Amazon put all the one-click crap in there; your options are literally "don't keep a card on file with Amazon at all" or "try not to bump when I'm scrolling through music on my phone".

I expect amazon to ask me to authenticate before I pay for something. I'm not asking for a parental control feature per se, although it would be nice to have - only let the kid watch/listen to things of a certain rating.
What I really want is at the minimum for the free stuff not to ask authorization/authentication and for paid stuff to ask.
The old amazon parental control model (at least on fire tv) sucked. It was either or. Either you get asked everytime you try to play something for your pin, or you can buy whatever you want without any questions.
Now they've fixed it, I think and you can only enable asking for pin for paid stuff.
Apple did it bad too. You have to put in a cc and your password every freaking time you try to get any app (paid or not).
The only one who did it right is google. No questions for free stuff, no CC needed unless you actually want to purchase something.

Oh, this is going to end up badly.

yep. and the upload music thing's FREE
you can do that without paying for their service, up to..... something like 20k songs or so (i forget the exact limit but it's pretty big)
and any albums you buy are yours to keep without paying. (well, you gotta buy the album, but there's no upkeep cost and you can DOWNLOAD the album once you bought it. no downloading albums you just have through all access though.)
you only need to pay if you want access to the entire music library for streaming, and they throw in no ads on youtube into the bargain.
not only that but you can create playlists and then tell google to turn that playlist into a radio station so you can curate songs you like together and it'll play songs that are like the songs in the playlist!
awesome!
-
@dangeRuss how much of a hassle would it be to just have a second Amazon account with no CC on file for your kids to use?
Or does it not let you buy free stuff if your account doesn't have a CC on file?
-
@accalia said in Amazon Music:

They stole that idea from last.fm, which is pretty much dead now. But yeah, I like that, too.
there's no upkeep cost and you can DOWNLOAD the album once you bought it.
If that wasn't the case, I would have never subscribed and certainly not bought anything. Restrictive DRM can suck my ****, and every company who tries to pull that shit should be kicked in the balls/vagina/<insert_sexual_organ_here>.

First of all it's on my wife's phone. Second of all I don't think you get free prime music on additional amazon prime members. Not that we can have additional members since we're on a student account.
-

I googled around and was able to find a way to register my Apple account without having to give them a CC. Installing apps does require the Apple ID password, even if the apps are free, but that's really the way I'd prefer to have that work.
-
@dangeRuss oh, you only get the free music because you have Prime on that account? Yeah, I dunno what you can do about that...

They stole that idea from last.fm
yeah, they did.
so basically they have:
- Cheap all access streaming
- upload your collection
- download purchased songs/albums (though i will admit figuring out how to buy an album when you have all access is less than intuitive)
- better music selection than last.fm, spotify, and pandora
- a music collection on par with amazon
- works on IOS, Android, and PC (mac and
cheeselinux too!) - Ability to block in app purchases through password or not having permanent payment method on file
- "Don't be evil" corporate motto
- Accalia seal of approvalTM*

@accalia said in Amazon Music:
so basically they have: […]
The only thing they don't have is a way to bundle purchases of single songs, i.e. a fucking shopping cart, which means your CC will likely be blocked if you purchase more than 5 songs at a time. I already wrote a rant about that .
(Yes, I know you can just buy a gift card. But it's stupid that they're forcing me to do that.)

yeah that's stupid. but i have enough people that pay me money for services using google wallet that i just set it up to use my wallet balance before my card, and then just leave a jackson or so in there whenever i withdraw my balance.
at least there is an easy selfserve way to fix it, even if it shouldn't be a problem to begin with.

I rarely purchase whole albums, unless I really like the artist.
But when you try to buy 6+ songs, how many different albums do they come from?
I am a bit of a completionist in some areas so I don't buy many singles, but usually there's a point where it makes fiscal sense just to grab the whole album on account of the subset costing more.
-

Amazon has promptly refunded me whenever I've fucked up ordering something, even sometimes when it was clearly my fault.
I actually got them to refund a ~$200 e-textbook that I purchased a few months prior. Though that conversation was a little weird.
"Our policy is to allow thirty days for returns. Why are you returning it?"
"Well, I needed it for a class but (my teacher was insane and so) I dropped the class and now I don't need it..."
"Did you purchase it by mistake?"
"No, I purchased it on purpose but I don't need it now blah blah blah..."
"So what is the reason for your return?"
[repeating myself]
"Would you say you purchased it by mistake?"
dawning realization that this is the magic phrase that would enable my return
"Yes! I purchased it by mistake!"
Refunded!
-

Yea, the guy basically said that to me. MP3 refunds are not allowed unless they are not working or purchased by mistake.

@Jaloopa you get Amazon Video as an additional member? Are you sure? Because I remember getting my own Prime account because I couldn't get Instant Video as an additional member on my dad's plan...
-
@Akko Yeah, definitely. I can watch on my phone, which is tied to my account. Watched shows is different between us, as I realised when trying to pick up the Walking Dead where I'd left off on the smart TV.
I wouldn't be surprised if it was different in different countries. You're in Germany aren't you? I'm in the UK

Yep. Now that you mention it, that is probably the reason. I know I specifically looked up if I could use Instant Video without buying my own Prime subscription... Well that's the way it is over here, gotta pay extra for everything -_- (and you can't get a lot of stuff at all)

Hmm.
The following Prime benefits can be shared in an Amazon Household:
Fast & FREE Prime Shipping benefits
Access to Prime Video (streaming only)
Early access to Amazon Lightning Deals
Prime Photos online storage
Kindle Owners’ Lending Library
20% off diaper and 15% off Baby Registry discounts
Fresh shipping benefits (for Prime Fresh members only)Not sure what streaming only means, but sounds pretty cool. One of the main reasons I got my own account was for the video (although I barely use it anymore, mostly netflix now).

Sounds like more of a manager issue.
"Sir, maybe we should authenticate all purchases so that unauthorized people cannot buy items on the device?"
"Nonsense. More sales equals more better."
"But what if their kids are on their phone and order $1000 worth of Disney music?"
"Did I stutter? More sales equals more better."
-
@Polygeekery shortsighted thinking is fun.
I heard a while ago that research has concluded that fake 5 star reviews to boost product ratings has zero or negative effect on profits. You get more sales, but when people expect it to be awesome from all the reviews, they're more likely to send your mediocre product back, sometimes even people who would have bought it and kept it if they had more realistic expectations

Are you sure about that? Admittedly, I do not have an iPhone, but I do run Macs and AppleTV and I have only ever been asked for my iTunes password when making a purchase or installing anything. For AppleTV, anytime we purchase a movie or something of the sort it works off of a PIN that I setup.

I don't have any of those fancy useless things like AppleTV and Macs, but when I used IPAD/IPhone (which are pretty useless too), I had to give them a CC and every time I try to install anything it asks for my password. Since it's in keepass and I have to actually type it out, it's a PITA.

@Polygeekery I've been asked for a password when trying to install something free on my wife's iphone. Her Apple TV didn't ask for any sort of PIN when her parents were house sitting and we showed them "don't worry about accidentally ordering anything, it will ask for a password if you try to do something that will cost extra, like renting a movie. Look. Oh, it should have asked for a password there. Guess you've got something to watch then"
