Representative line

  • Alright, I haven't been here in a while because my apartment burned down.  I have a computer now, but no internet.  Anyways, I have been working on an old app here at work and came across this representative line in a stored proceedure:

    SET @iOpeningParenthesisLocation = CHARINDEX('.',@strProductVersionString)

  • Wasthe burning down of the house related to debugging such code??

This is a beautiful.  Though it looks like there might be a reasonable explanation, I'm sure there isn't.

    Dot is the new parenthesis!

tster, I think this line may have overloaded your PC's logical circuits and caused the fire!

    Ain't copypasta great?

Obviously you're only going to scan through  product version strings, which are formatted so that where a '.' is will be the place you want to insert parentheses in a control string. Since most versions are 5.0.6.etc, you can use this line in a loop and insert parentheses to highlight version differences.

  • Nothing really to say about the WTF (obviously it's terrible), but I'm sorry to hear about your apartment burning down.  I'm glad you seem to be okay and I sincerely hope nobody was hurt and that nothing irreplaceable was lost.  Take care.

No one was hurt, and I got out most of the irreplacable things (although, I'm not positive I can repair/restore them).   I should be back in full force on the forums in a couple weeks.

    BTW,  Natick >>> Worcester

  • Good to hear nobody hurt, and Worcester UK >>> Worcester MA.

Like I've ever been to Worcester MA.  Welcome back.

Not even a hint of sarcasm or vitriol?  Apparently someone's hijacked the morbiuswilters account.

Dammit, pesto, if I've told you once, I've told you a thousand times: indoor plumbing is not witchcraft!  I promise that we're not in cahoots with Lucifer up here, so you can put down your torch and pitchfork and go back to playing the banjo.
