Jack Thompson Disbarred

  • About freaking time. Didn't they start working on that, like, over a year ago?

Having said that, I wholeheartedly agree with the OP.

  •  Karma's a bitch.

  •  Good, what a dick.

  • I don't like the guy, but what illegal activities did he engage in?  He made several filings against the Florida Bar and various Florida judges that alleged some dubious things, but it seems like this is just retribution by the Bar for his campaign against it.  Is there actually any legal reason why he should have been disbarred?

From what I read, there was a lot of talk about his harassment of defendants, judges, witnesses, etc. etc. etc. Also a lot of concern about whether he was mentally fit to be in the courtroom.

This guy is just crazy. From what I heard - he frequently submitted porn as evidence and was repeatedly told to stop.

You just have to ask yourself: should a crazy and arrogant man be allowed to have a voice in our legal system after blatantly and repeatedly disrespecting the rules?

That's what I heard too, but some of the harassment was him claiming the Florida courts and Bar were acting inappropriately.  Whether he was right or wrong about that, it's pretty bad to have the same people he has publicly criticized decide that he should be disbarred.  I was talking to pstorer about this and we both think the disbarment for life was pretty harsh.  I don't know what would normally happen to someone who supposedly did these things, but Clinton was only disbarred for something like 5 years after committing perjury and obstruction of justice in a Federal investigation, so I have to think court filings that may have been inappropriate should not carry the same sentence.  I have no idea how legit the claims are, but the fact that he was tried by many of the same people he has criticized and that he supposedly harassed seems like a conflict of interest.  The penalty seems excessive and the entire thing reeks of corruption and just seems like an attempt to railroad Thompson for political reasons.  Of course, that may be wrong, but it's certainly a possibility and it doesn't seem like the Florida Bar or courts were in a position to be unbiased.

Luckily he's appealing it to a Federal court, so hopefully they will review the evidence and we will get a clearer picture from an independent third party.  Hey, if everything they said about him was provable and lifetime disbarment is the same sentence anyone else would get for similar actions, then it's fair.  A lot of things about the case bother me, though.

Hm... there are a lot of "WTF?" cases in his record, he seems to have some fixation on distributing porn to children. But the most disturbing one would be this:

    @wikipedia article said:

Thompson claims that the complaints violate state religious protections because his advocacy is motivated by his Christian faith.
Huh? Is this guy truly thinking that the law adheres to "Christian law"?

No, he's saying that the complaints are not valid because they are essentially criticisms of his faith.  Whether he is right or wrong, it seems like a very clear point to me.  He's claiming prosecuting him would violate his religious freedoms.

  • Another control addict hiding under the cloak of organized religion. Anytime anyone says "I'm doing it to protect children" it's usually a sign of some kind of control addiction + hypocrisy.

Agreed, "helping children" quite often actually means "ruthlessly imposing my political and religious views on everyone else"
case in point the australian "Family First" party

Yes, but this still doesn't mean that he did anything warranting lifetime disbarment.  The man certainly doesn't hold popular views, but obviously that is not grounds for punishing him.  Like I said, I don't know all the details nor how serious his offenses would be punished in other cases, but the whole thing seems fishy to say the least.  I really hope the Federal District court takes up the case so a third party can review the claims and try to divine truth in this mess.

If not, it's going to get awfully quiet in courtrooms across the nation, as well as in the White House and on the Hill (and all their equivalents at all levels).
