Quadcore...

  • This isn't really a WTF, just thought it was funny and worth sharing...

My dad bought a new computer and asked me to set it up. I was curious as to what it was and looked under "my computer". It's a really nice machine, quadcore with 6 gb of memory. I told him that, but he was clueless.

    "What does quadcore mean?"

"Well, the simple way to put it is, it's like you have four computers in here, so you can do more things at once."

... Time passes, I'm messing with vista and the networking settings and something isn't working right and I mumble some symbols and special characters under my breath, he asks what's up, I tell him something's not working right, and he comes back with, "Well can you try using one of the other 3 computers and making it work with one of them? I mean it only needs to work on one of them and I'll be happy."

  •  So you did a really bad job of explaining the concept?  That's the joke?

Also, there's a "Funny Stuff" forum for stuff that isn't a WTF but is still humorous.  Just for future reference.

I love how much of a dick you are, morbius.

Your Dad and mine have the same sense of humour!

    *takes a bow*

  •  I don't think your father (or his response) is a WTF. I'd expect something like that from anyone who doesn't know what quadcore means if you explain it to them like that. ;)

BTW, my mom's dual core with like 2gigs of ram (maybe more?) seems to run slower and pretty sluggish compared to my 4-to-5-years-old 2.6ghz intel with 1gig of ram. That's what you get for using a dozen USB tools (all connected all the time) and Symantec Norton AntiVirus.

That's the RWTF, apparently anti virus software works by bombing back the CPU to the happier Z80 stone age when no virus existed, slowing down the spreading of viruses simply by slowing down their hosts to near-freeze. If you had a broken front door and proof of a bearded man actually getting in would you a) strip search everyone passing by on the street if they have a trace of beard with them, and if so, terminate or b) just repair your front door?

How is Morbius being a dick? What he said was entirely valid. Clearly the OP's father is not exactly tech savvy (not a WTF). He explained the idea of a quadcore really badly (MAYBE a WTF) and then wonder why his father comes up with something that's ENTIRELY VALID within his understanding of quadcore as explained by the OP (most definitely NOT a WTF).

    1. The OP starts with "Not really a WTF but...."

    2. Being factually accurate in no way precludes anyone from being a dick.  It reminds me of the tech support guy in The Office...  "I need help with my computer";   "It's not your computer";  "Yes it is, this one here";  "It's not your computer, it's the company's";   "You're a dick".

    1. As Morbius pointed out, if he KNOWS it's not a WTF there are other forums that can be posted in.

    2. I don't believe I ever made that assertion. I merely stated that in this particular situation I felt his response entirely justified.

FWIW my answer would be: "The network card and its settings are shared by the 4 internal computers. If I fix it for one, it will be fixed for all..."

If only there were a forum for such posts...

I only mutter unprintable characters under my breath.  "This computer still isn't working!  Null, bell, ACK!"
