I'm still surprised that the company still exists. And how the fuck do they still manage to make enough money to employ almost 10,000 people?

Yahoo said in https://investor.yahoo.net/results.cfm:
"With the lowest cost structure and headcount in a decade, we continue to make solid progress against our 2016 plan. Through disciplined expense management and focused execution, we delivered Q2 results that met guidance across the board and in some areas exceeded it," said Marissa Mayer, CEO of Yahoo. "In addition to our efforts to improve the operating business, our board has made great progress on strategic alternatives. We are relentlessly focused on delivering shareholder value."
$ in millions Q1’15 Q2’15 Q3’15 Q4’15 Q1’16 Q2’16 GAAP net earnings $21 ($22) $76 ($4,435) ($99) ($440) GAAP net margin 2% (2%) 6% N/M (9%) (34%) Solid progress indeed.

@DogsB Yahoo mail actually works pretty well. If you use adblock it's as good as Gmail (at least as far as I can tell, I'm not a webmail pro).
-
@clatter said in Web scale breaches! This time the president's daughter might be affected!:
Solid progress indeed.
The Q4'15 earnings look like something exceptional was booked at that point — which isn't necessarily a big problem — but the downward trend since that point looks more serious. Did they sell something at a loss in Q4'15 that was a substantial revenue generator? (CBA to check…)

@dkf The official explanation is:
We recorded a $4,461 million non-cash goodwill impairment charge as a result of our annual goodwill impairment test conducted in the fourth quarter of 2015. We concluded that the carrying value of our U.S. & Canada, Europe, Latin America and Tumblr reporting units exceeded their respective estimated fair values. The goodwill impairment resulted from a combination of factors, including decreases in our market capitalization, projected operating results and estimated future cash flows.
So, they suddenly realised their brand is worthless.
-
@anonymous234 I can also confirm, I am a Yahoo user. It was my first mail account that my parents created for me long before I created a Google account and started using GMail more. There's a lot of old stuff I'm too lazy to move over. Also Yahoo has actual folders and filters compared to GMail's labels.
As for how this breach affected me - all I had to do was delete my security questions. They make it easy and tell you it makes your account more secure.

errrrr.... i am not an expert in these but isn't () indicating a negative numberok - looked it up:
http://uk.businessinsider.com/yahoo-earnings-q4-2015-2016-2Net loss for full year 2015 came in at $4.35 billion, largely due to a $4.5 billion goodwill impairment charge, indicating the company might have overpaid for some of its startup acquisitions.Just realised that @clatter has already done this

Yes. That's how financial things tend to report negatives. The “exceptional thing” that was booked was a loss, and a big one-off like that doesn't necessarily indicate a problem; shit genuinely sometimes just happens and that's how life goes. Much more worrying (were I an investor) is the haemorrhaging afterwards; that's what the management ought to be hauled over the coals for.

If only they had tilted the exclamation point in their logo another 2% to the right to add slightly more whimsy this could all have been avoided.

My wife uses Yahoo mail for the same reason and in the same way I use hotmail:
- Have had the address for more than a decade
- It's the go-to signup email for forums and newsletters
- Filter set to "exclusive" so 99% of the mail goes to junk and 1% makes it to inbox, like it should be
- Have a real email address for actual use

My original Yahoo account has been compromised twice with no keylogger on my machine and a unique password over 30 characters long the second time and a mostly unique password over 15 characters long the first time. I made a new one, and I got a spam email on it the day after I made it, despite not having used it at all.

Kill him, then torture him, then cut off his members and dump them into a river.
It's the only way to be sure. A mistake would cost too much.

@DogsB said in Web scale breaches! This time the president's daughter might be affected!:

Yup. But only because I have a Yahoo business account. (They - well the people they sold it to, Aabaco - host my website.) And to access my domain's email via the web, I have to tie it to a Yahoo account. (No one knows my yahoo acct. And almost unbelievably, I get no spam on it)
Now Aabaco sent an email that they're going to get rid of POP-only email access (must be POP+web access). Guess what, my-domain-acct to Yahoo acct is 1:1. So I have to create a new Yahoo account for every POP acct I've created. Fuckers. (I only have 3, but still...)

Back in the day I abandoned Hotmail when I created a new email address because the old one was getting too much spam and within 5 minutes the new one started getting spam. I had not even used it for anything yet.
Then I went to Yahoo mail for much the same reason. Ended up leaving them for Gmail when I received a beta invite. Have not had any issues with spam since and have had the same personal email address for over a decade.

It's more or less like your phone number. You won't want to change it often or friends who no longer has direct contact with you will lose contact permenantly.
