  The "my" system has its advantage.  By declaring myInteger, myInteger2, myInteger3, etc., you know exactly how many integer variables you've declared in each function (besides myGlobalInteger, myGlobalInteger2, etc).  So you calculate quickly how much memory you're using.  Or something.

We had two text-output calls: PRINT() and DEBUG(). Our programs ran fine when we weren't debugging, but every once in a while everything would lock up and die violently if we were. We couldn't figure it out. PRINT checked if the current line was 24, and if so it looped. DEBUG checked if the current line was 25, and if so it looped. As we all know, simple text output occupies the memory addresses 0xF000 (or something - it's been a while) through 0x10000. Our boot loader loaded the kernel into the address 0x10000. When the correct sequence of PRINT and DEBUG messages were called, the checks passed and the output functions stopped looping. Any subsequent calls to the output functions wrote arbitrary strings into kernel space, causing all hell to break loose. The fix was just a matter of changing == to >=. I never let my partner live that one down. After that I was in charge of all output functionality.

  Yes I recall reading that research a year or two ago. It roughly matches real world experience. At least the Vista dialog showed it was doing something as the file names whizzed through one by one.

  Not to mention you can setup your own Code Snippets for the stuff that's not there by default.  Makes it pretty trivial for most of the commonly used blocks - unless of course you're using notepad to write your code.

  I don't know, I think that deliberately missing photos IN A PHOTO GALLERY at least qualifies as a minor WTF. It's like a book with just "NEEDS WORDS" written inside it, or getting served up a meal at a restaurant that's just a plate with a note on it that says "NEEDS FOOD". The whole point of a photo gallery is photos - and they've deliberately not put any photos in it. I'd agree with you that it was complete attention seeking if it was just a broken or missing photo though.

  Don't forget that in a production PHP system, warnings should be disabled. The only time I ever use @ in my code is somewhere I truly don't care if the call succeeds or not, i.e: in cases where "it's nice if it works, but not necessary for life to go on". I will admit, though, that it is tempting during development to slap down useless foreach() warnings with @. Case in point... let's say you've got a set of checkboxes in a form, something like: <input type="checkbox" name="boxes[]" value="val1"><input type="checkbox" name="boxes[]" value="val2">etc... And process them as: $boxes = $_POST['boxes'];foreach ($boxes as $idx => $val) { ... yada yada yada...} If the form's submitted and none of those boxes were checked, $boxes will be a NULL value, causing PHP to spit out PHP Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in <file><file> on line <x><x>.</x></file> The joys of a shared namespace for all variables, I suppose. Perl's much nicer in this regard, with different namespaces for scalars, arrays, and hashes, and NOT complaining when an array you're iterating over happens to be empty. p.s. For those who've managed to avoid PHP so far (lucky buggers...), naming a form field as name[] (with the brackets) will tell PHP to treat those fields as a multi-value field and store them into the $_GET/$_POST/$_REQUEST superglobals as an array, rather than a single value which contains only the last value as submitted by the useragent.
