What kind of Docker container reads thedailywtf.com? (with apologies to Playboy's circulatory dept. circa 1972)
-
Just wondering what impact the discoclusterfuck saga has had on the original site.
Before Alex switched over to discontent,
with our full supportagainst all of our dire warnings I would start on the main site and then head into the comments.
Nowadays I revel in the discosaster that is what.thedailywtf.com and never hit the main site - I even gloss over the threads that are under the "Article" category cos I can't be arsed going over there to read the original article (and there's enough entertainment around the entire meta that is what.thedailywtf.com)Am I unique and/or does anyone know what impact this has had on the original site?
-
i'd be interested to see the metrics, because i rarely hit the main site as well.
i read the article threads and if the conversation looks interesting enough i'll read the article itself.... but that is about it.
-
I read most of the articles, usually something like 5 at the time while I catch up. So any metric should be per-article, not per-visit, because I suspect many people might be doing this.
-
I found this site through the articles and their comments, but these days I just read the forums and then read an article when I notice its comment thread.
-
Yeah - that's kind of what I was expecting. The main site has effectively become a side-margin of the forum.
-
My usage mirrors yours perfectly.
Which is kinda creepy...
-
I read the articles when I see a new article thread, click through to the article, read it, then return to the article thread to read the comments.
Otherwise I spend my time on the forums.
-
I read the front page almost daily, though I won't read the full article if I don't get it (Mon-Thurs). I'll read the articles threads when they pop up in "new" (which sometimes they don't do). I like them because you tend to get posters in there who you don't see on the rest of the site.
-
I also read 5-10 articles at a time. Partly because I never did manage to get the article topics to show up as new.
However, I've noticed that the clientele in the article threads is different compared to the rest of the forums; there are people who only post in the article threads.
Edit: 'd by @boner.
-
I very rarely even read articles, let alone go to the site. Front page stories are too sugary and fiction-like for my taste. I prefer the raw stuff here.
I did visit the site when we injected spinners through the discourse widget, so that's something, I guess.
-
There could be a link for the main site at the forum header, suggestion for the new forum.
It was fun to watch the discocalypse. We should host the new forum in a openbsd server and file some bugs while at it. I would love to watch a long flame war with De Raadt and @blakeyrat involved.

That's the thing, innit? If we migrated to a "working" forum then perhaps the community would wither and die...
-
I thought you were one of the writing staff, do you not read the articles? Not even the ones you yourself produce?
Filed Under: Clearly explains the quality of frontpage articles
On topic: I used to always click on an article topic and then read the article but after taking a break for a week, I didn't feel the need to catch up, yet...
Filed Under: INB4 "How do you even get to the frontpage from the forums?"

That's a bit naive. There will always be some skullfuckery for us to complain about. If not we'll just turn on each other like rabid dogs.

Filed Under: At least quote yourself completely

Oh, I suppose more context is needed: I have it set where all threads in Articles show up as new, and I routinely read every unread and new post Discourse gives me :)
-
I follow the Articles category, so yes... kind of...
-

It's nice to have a catalyst, though, for those rare occasions when simply being in the same virtual room isn't enough to start an argument :)

Filed Under: I actually believe that you are reading the articles but damn, such an oppurtunity!
-
I get the articles using RSS, but other than that just the forum.
-
you tend to get posters in there who you don't see on the rest of the site
Which shows that there are plenty of people still visiting the main site and ignoring the majority of the forums. Us bridge dwellers who actually look in Meta aren't a fair sample.
-
That's a good point.
And, having taken a year out from these hallowed grounds (but having still been involved in the initial disaster), it did take me a while to settle back into the rhythm of the site so I would expect it's pretty daunting for any genuinely new users.

Not particularly. Just remember to bite back and not to take it to heart. ^_^

It works pretty well for SomethingAwful.
-
I read the articles when new ones pop up in my RSS feed. And once having read them, I go to the comments and immediately click on the Continue reading on Dicksores link because the comments section on the FP is crap.
-
I read articles (through this forum) but ever since EFL I have not seen anything that great, the forum is more interesting and funny.
I would love to watch a long flame war with De Raadt and @blakeyrat involved.
He does not flame unless it is a game (in which case I have no interest) or about OSS or Mac Classic. Every once in a while there are gems, that makes the whole thread more interesting.
-
I guess it's up to me to be the lone person that still goes to the main site first, reads the article for the day, then jumps over the forum.
-
A couple years ago I used to visit the front page and read the articles all the time. I'd come to the "side-bar" forums every now and then, and I remember seeing blakeyrat saying something like "who even visits the front page anymore?" and I was like "wtf, lots of people do".
After a while I kinda "switched" to the visiting the forum and only occasionally the front page.
So what I'm saying is: yes, there's probably a lot of people out there that read TDWTF and don't visit the forum (or visit occasionally but only to lurk), and then there's us.
-
I visit
worsethanfailure.com
once a day. What isthedailywtf.com
?

-
First, it took every ounce of self control I had not to point out that the subdomain of what.thedailywtf.com is on the domain, and still counts as visiting it. You're welcome ;)
Second, I wouldn't be here without the articles. The forum is fun, and seems like a fairly good group with a great pool of knowledge and camaraderie. But yeah, no, I wouldn't be here without the articles. Sometimes they are terrible, but often they are good, and every now and then they are awesome. I especially like the tales from the interview ones
-
The forum is fun, and seems like a fairly good group with a great pool of knowledge and camaraderie.
And we also have @blakeyrat!

And then you have the members of the forum. The less said the better.

And we also have @blakeyrat!
As I have stated in the past, I love @blakeyrat. I find him as amusing as I find grumpy cat
-
I have this mixed image of an angry Jim Parsons and a grumpy cat, but close.

I need someone to photoshop that up immediately!

FWIW, they site and the forum are two of the four tabs I keep pinned.

You voluntarily passed on an almost-guaranteed pendantry ? YMBNH

These aren't the you are looking for

I already have one.
Fiiiiiiiiiiine, it is not the I am looking for, even though that kills the Obi-Wan moment.
-

Did you mean @blakeycat ?
-
I think I might have read maybe a dozen FP articles in the last 6 months. Here's where the fun is.
-
No, it's @grumpyrat.
-
-
Did you mean @blakeycat ?
... I don't think he would like being renamed to a cat ... o_O
-
Blakeycat is real!

Eh, the articles are all dreck anyway. Except that Stachowski guy, he's mighty good.
