Sports car hipsters and the foxes who love them

Does any US manufacturer actually make a sports car?

I was just about to say "Corvette? If you squint?" but got 'd

As much as I love the Corvette, no, it's not a sports car. But it's almost there.

That's a muscle car; they're great for the standing quarter-mile, and that's about it.This is a sports car:
It may only have 120hp, but it'll outcorner just about anything ;)
-
As much as I love the Corvette, no, it's not a sports car. But it's almost there.
On what basis?
The fact it's not European?
-
-
When I was in high school I had a jar labelled "Corvette Fund". I don't think it ever had more than about $6 in it.
But then I grew up, and now that I could probably afford a used Corvette if I wanted to, I'm all like "meh, my Silverado is better."
-

I think you need to talk about your definition. I suspect, given your username, that this is just car racing hipterism.
-

The fact it's not European?
The fact that the rear suspension is leaf springs, and on the road, it rides about as smooth as a jackhammer

The whole point of a sports car is cornering; that Elise may only have 120hp, but it also weighs less than 700kg. And on proper roads, that low weight really comes into play; like I said, the Elise with outcorner just about anything ;)

Here in the Midwest, most roads are straight and flat, you can pretty much drive from Illinois to Wyoming without touching a steering wheel. That car would never have a chance to corner.
-
The whole point of a sports car is cornering;
So all race tracks and roads are big circles?
I bet that Corvette would still get around a track faster - it'd smash the Elise.

Circuit de la Sarthe, yes; Tsukubaโฆ not so much
-
What about the Pike's Peak Run?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7VAJaZAV-gQ
Wow, 10 minutes. When we drove that road, I think it took us 50 minutes to get to the top! And the poor 4-cylinder rental car smelled like it was on fire.

Tsukubaโฆ not so much
ORLY?
Chevrolet Corvette Z06 1:04.55
ยญ
Lotus Elise 111R 1:07.14
-
Fine, fair enough.
But look at what's at the top: a car with a 1.2l engine
-
Which weighs as much as a shoe.
Your point was the Elise was a sports car but the Z06 wasn't because of some corner related gibberish.
The point of the sports car is to get from start to finish faster. Leaf springs or not, you can't really claim the Z06 isn't a sports car.

Ford would say you want a Mustang. I don't know if you consider that a "sports car". I'd file it under "barely".
The Taurus also has more powerful engine options than the Fusion, I believe.
Chevy and Chrysler make sports cars. I'm not sure anything Ford makes would quality. All three of them do actual racing though.
EDIT: Ford has a new GT coming out next model year, and they make the F-150 Raptor which is a sports pickup truck, if you believe that. https://social.ford.com/content/fordsocial/en/articles/autoshow/ford-performance-lineup-poised-for-a-big-year.html?fmccmp=lp-cars-fut-hp-ford-gt https://social.ford.com/content/fordsocial/en/articles/autoshow/all-new-ford-gt-sets-new-standard-for-ford-innovation.html

No, that's the point of a racing car; a sports car is all about fun. And you'll have a lot more fun in the Elise than the Vette, because the Elise is so much better in the corners
@blakeyrat said:Ford would say you want a Mustang. I don't know if you consider that a "sports car". I'd file it under "barely".
I'd file it under 'muscle car'. Because that's exactly what it is.
@blakeyrat said:Chevy and Chrysler make sports cars.
The Corvette is almost a sports car; not sure anything Chrysler makes really qualifies though.

One of those words doesn't belongโฆ

You've not been in a Corvette for a while. Or...most peobably...ever. the C4s were the last to use transverse composite monosprings.
The C6s and C7s ride as well, or better, than the BMW 650i and damn sure better than the Elise and it's brethren.
-
And you'll have a lot more fun in the Elise than the Vette, because the Elise is so much better in the corners
Don't tell me how to have fun.
-
And you'll have a lot more fun in the Elise than the Vette, because the Elise is so much better in the corners
No you'll have more fun because you're defining sports car and fun like that.
-
And given the nature of European roads, can you really blame me?
-
nd you'll have a lot more fun in the Elise t
You can have even more fun in a Winnebago
-
There is no such thing as fun.
-
And given the nature of European roads, can you really blame me?
On a normal European road the difference between the Elise and the Z06 in how fast they can go around a corner won't be enough that you'll actually notice.
You'll be going round it fucking fast either way.
-
You'll be going round it fucking fast either way.
That sort of ride is the opposite of what I consider fun.

I'm sure you could get the speed limited to 30mph if you asked Corvette nicely.
-
I just never trust the people coming around the bend. Can never see them until it's too late. And when it comes to driving / cars, I'm of the "It's the destination, not the journey" kind of guy. Driving is a means to an end for me.

I am just here to inform you I read all these posts AFTER they were jeffed IN THE STATUS THREAD. And the move notification was on top.
And now they are all unread again, fucking Discourse.
Also, I didn't screenshot it. Because I'm a dumbass.
-
I'm also wondering why the thread is called
Sports car hipsters and the foxes who love them
given there are no foxes in this thread <yet
-
I'm also wondering why the thread is called
Because it amused me. Unlike driving fast around a curvy road.

I think Blakey meant the Viper when he mentioned Chrysler.
-
Just because Lamborghini worked on the engine, doesn't make it a sports car
The Viper is a muscle car, albeit an unusual one in that it doesn't have a V8.
-
The Dodge Viper SRT (formerly the SRT Viper between 2012 and 2014) is a sports car, manufactured by the Dodge (SRT for 2013 and 2014) division of Fiat Chrysler. Production of the two-seat sports car began at New Mack Assembly in 1991 and moved to its current home at Conner Avenue Assembly in October 1995.

But Allison built my transmission so that makes my pickup a literal battle tank!
-
A sports car (sportscar) is a small, usually two seater, two door automobile designed for spirited performance and nimble handling.
A Viper is not nimble. Not in the slightest.
Wikipedia contradicting itself there
-
A Viper is not nimble. Not in the slightest.
I fail to see how the Viper is any less nimble than any, say, an Avantador or an NSX?

It's not my fault that page is self-contradictory
