To be fair, we're much further along that road in Europe. I only use them for a few things a year now, and I don't want to give any government the authority to directly debit my account thankyouverymuch…

I think fire should be gotten rid of instead. We have electric heaters, cookers, and so on these days, and think of the savings if we could abolish all fire departments/brigades!

Otherwise I accede to to your claim that fire (as an invention) is older than that of the wheel and should, therefore, be removed first.
While I'm at it: Does anybody know the position of prostitution on this list, and should it get an exemption?

It depends on whether you can count it as an invention, I suppose. Also, if you think abolishing fire services would cause an outcry, imagine what abolishing prostitution would result in.

I've never used a check nor had a check book (or whatever is called). Also, I don't see why people keep going to their banks to update their account book or why even have one.

I'm not sure I could get a chequebook even if I wanted one. I also have to pay extra if I want physical statements instead of .pdfs.

Most of the checks that are written in my name actually come from my bank. On stuff that we have set up to pay through them that other people also pay via, they apparently aggregate stuff and send a physical check (or so I've been told).
I rarely write a check. Most of those are for stuff for my kids through school. Lab fees and the like. I do receive the occasional check for various reasons.

Belt-onion here.... even I don't use checks in public... but I fire off 10-20 a month for bills and donations via the mail.
Past couple of years I feel like I've mastered the skill of paying on time, so I may attempt (gradually) the new skill of online banking...

Looking at my cheque history i see that for as far back as i can see online (one year unless i drill back into my statement archive) i can see that i have written a check on the 1st and 15th of the month every month to the same person..... and that's it. just 24 cheques.
I would love to change to paying my rent via direct debit or something, but my landlord only has the one tenant (me) so it's not worth her effort to set it up and the expense her bank would charge for it.
I could also move to paying monthly i guess, but... well this works for is.

That's the odd thing - I do.
Every day I go to the local shop and am surrounded by the aged. Yet here they all use cash, which is slow as hell. Everybody else uses the PayWave thing and the cashiers are happy.

I look out for young hispanic ladies with strollers. They often end up using WIC vouchers which includes a painful process of verifying that they got the right stuff. Invariably, they don't. Takes for freaking ever.

I still write checks to pay bills. I find that I pay more attention about my finances when I have to physically write a check and see the numbers.

My experience of that is "pension day", which varies from region to region. That is to say, one afternoon a week, the supermarket is crowded out by pensioners doing their shopping. The queues at the checkout do get a bit clogged and slow if you time it
rightwrong. However, it can be mitigated by finding a checkout station that is not wide enough for "zimmer frames" or "walkers"

In the US we have a similar phenomenon, except it is the first of the month and it is welfare recipients. You don't go in to a Walmart between the 1st and 3rd.
