Creating a PM to yourself instead of who you wanted
-
steps to reproduce:
- go to your PMs http://what.thedailywtf.com/my/private-messages
- Click on someone's avatar to open their usercard
- Click Private message to open private message compose window
- your name is in the to field!
- fail to notice this
- compose your message
- try to send
- "Error archetype: Cannot send a private message to that user"
- WTF‽
- ooooooh
- fix who the PM is to and resend
- it worked this time!
sorry for the lack of pictures, i didn't feel like trying to anonymize my PMs screen.
EDIT: thanks @VinDuv for the link that works for any user!

go to your PMs (I.E. http://what.thedailywtf.com/my/private-messages)
FTFYNice find.
It happens on all activity pages; if you go to /users/<someone>/activity/replies and click an avatar, then click “Private message”, <someone> will be in the “To” field.

Ah, that kinda makes sense as you are on their profile so you probably want to PM them but overriding the usercard "send a PM" makes it wonky when it's a different card.
-
but overriding the usercard "send a PM" directly violates the principle of least surprise.
FTFY.
really, the user card should always PM the person who owns that usercard.
in this case i wanted to PM something to @PJH and i was on that screen anyway because i had just PMed something to @sockbot so it made sense to click his icon (from the flags i've been handing out on occasion(yes i do hand out flags for pedantry and stuff)) rather than navigating to his profile to PM.
I was surprised when it tirned out to put my username in the to field.

Yes master Accalia Fairyfox, I shall appear as summoned.
-
Oh, has this inconsistency been pointed out on meta.d? Can't remember if you are one of those that does things over there or not.
EDIT: spelling+missing word
-
i do things over there on occasion... i'll need to get a PM over there to post the repro steps though.... if someone else on meta.d would oblige? ;-)
-
Done.
-
excellent. i'll post a bug later this evening (after a gaming session with friends. Borderlands the Pre-Sequel FTW!)

Posted on meta.d
for all the good that it may do us.

@accalia, if you are so lonely that you are trying to PM yourself, you can always PM me. We have good conversations.

Pervert.

trained by the best!
-
@algorythmics has been teaching you, eh?
-
Maybe easier to simply remove the User Card from the lists?
Yeah, because when there's a bug, the best option is to make it harder to do the thing you were trying to do, not fix it

thanks to @codinghorror for my new long name:

well it seem to have been fixed on meta.d
not sure when we'll pick it up but yay! One bug fixed how many created because if ember upgrades?
